KYSHOOFF,
There are several Distributorless ignition
Systems (DIS). They are each different.
Duel Plug (as in spark plug)DIS. Fires two plugs at the same time. Operates off of the CID (camshaft position sensor) and PIP (or CPS)(crankshaft position sensor).
DPI or Duel Plug Inhibit- Both left and right side plugs fire at the same time when the engine is running, however, when it is cranking only the right set of plugs fire. During cranking the control module signals the DIS module through the duel plug inhibit (DPI) circuit to inhibit or restric the left set of plugs.
The EDIS -Electronic Distributorless Ignition System - simplifies the earlier DIS by using a single crankshaft position sensor, a VRS or Variable Reluctance Sensor, in place of the PIP and the CID. The VRS generates a more complex signal, and provides more accurate spark timing.
Then there is the MECS system for Mazda and Fords using Mazda engines. I'll leave it at that.
I think the Vortec coil pack is the EDIS type, or even a refinement of it. I do not think you can interchange these systems. Can you modify the DPDIS to the EDIS system? Maybe, but I think it would necessitate a matching computer, sensors, etc. In other words a whole lot of research, and a lot of time and money IMHO. thumbs_u rangerj
