clutch

I heard there might be a way to replace the clutch w/out going out the bottom or pulling the engine. Is this possible? The only way i can think of doing it like this would be to pull just the trans. But, how to get it out??? I want to do it the easies way possible.

nik97 can change the clutch in a SHO in 3 hours without pulling the trans...of course he has has ALOT of practice. he is in the tranny of the month club.

If you can Find some means of SAFELY supporting the Engine, You can "Move" the transmission out of the way (It does not even need to come off the car.). Of course, This was done on a Lift. The clutch was installed in 2 hours, Tops. I was not the one who did it but instead watched in amazment as this person changed the Clutch in my SHO in less then 2 hours, By himself.

sam could you describe what you seen him do? did he support the motor then get it up in the air and take the ball joints loose n pull the axles?

I'll just say that the Motor was supported.

The Motor Mounts obviously disconnected.

The Subframe "Mostly" dropped.

Axles pulled, Suspension moved out of the way (Not taken off the car).

The transmission was then moved off to the side (Still sitting on the Subframe) with enough room to put in the new Flywheel, Clutch and PP.

Would I suggest this? NO.

Why?

Well, If you have not done a clutch Job before it could make things very easy to miss. The person who did my clutch has done WELL over 100 SHO clutch Jobs by now. He could probably do it with his eyes closed. If you were attempting to do it the way that he did on your First time, Your probably going to screw something up.

I'd stick with the SHOPP write-up if it was my first time.

I would buy this video. For 25 bucks any hands-on person could do a clutch. Its worth every penny, tells all the TQ specs and its also huge peace of mind for me. I hate thinking I missed something or did it wrong. Its literally 12 major steps or so and the SF is out and tranny is out after 2-3 more things. half the stuff I have done before, so most of the PITA problems wont happen. I will be doing a clutch for the 1st time 2morrow, so we will see how it will go. Hopefully it all goes smoothly. I can't wait to get my DD back.

Lol I did mine once and I screwed it up so I took it to someone I knew can do it right, area91.he doesn't believe in doing stuff fast. He takes everything apart and does it very well. My clutch works amazing.

About 10 hours total for a 1st timer with some help from a master mechanic. (SF and tranny removal ect.) I was spoiled though with a lift. I need to get a garage soon. It really was not THAT bad, thought it was alot worse.

Just because something is done fast does not mean it's done wrong.

My clutch that is a STOCK replacement and was replaced in 2 HOURS and has held up very well to my, Cammed, Nitrous Injected, Full Bolt on 3.0. As well as 100+ Auto-X Runs and a 10 runs down the strip, Not to mention the occasional Improper sloppy downshift, Missed gear and all around Sam'ness. I'll never use anything BUT a stock clutch for as long as I own this car (Unless I throw a blower on it or something). I can buy a stock Clutch and have it installed for LESS then your average Stage 2/3 Clutch. Not to mention, I like the way stock Clutches feel over any aftermarket clutch I've driven with or owned (A LOT!).

Keep in mind that the converse is also true:
Just because it's done slowly doesn't mean it's done right.

Edit: This is not a slam on Area91 or anyone else. ****, I think I'm just about the slowest SHO mechanic there is... Been doing a 3.2/trans swap on my '90 for almost 3 years now, and I'm almost ready to install.
