I think it is going to take a year to do the clutch, I went to remove the Y-pipe and broke 2 bolts on one end and didn't have a 15mm deep socket for the manifold ends. I love socket sets that skip the size you need.

On a side note, there are no CATS on the Y-pipe, is this going to throw any codes when I start driving the car?

Finally made some progress, got the Y-pipe out and the starter. I didn't break the manifold bolts like I thought I would. I need to get a 32mm deep socket to remove the axle nut.

Hopefully I can have the trans out by Saturday.

It will not generate codes.

there are a few good procedures on this forum I believe if you use the search function. Just make it a weekend/week job and take your time. The hardest part in some cases can be removing the TOB fork and replacing the quill sleeve.

Axle nuts are 30mm

I believe they are actually 29mm I had 32mm on the mind from my GF car.

I am at the point where it is time to drop subframe. I broke my 1/2" to 3/8" drive adapter on the first bolt.

Is there a way to get at the threads with some liquid wrench?

Yes, there are holes in the side of the subframe that you can use. They are not as conveniently located as one would like. I make extensions for the typical red spray can wands that come with Liquid Wrench by slipping a straw recycled from an empty Windex-type pump bottle over the red wand, then secure it with heat shrink. That extra length lets you get the spray where it needs to go.

Also, I'm not a fan of attacking old subframe bolts with an impact wrench. Manual is better. You want to start by tightening the bolt just slightly to break it loose. Then loosen slowly until it becomes resistant. That might be only a half turn, or less. Then tighten. Loosen again and try to go a little further than last time. That kind of patient back and forth approach can work out old rusted bolts that would otherwise shear off.

I finally have it all apart. What a mess, Some fingers on the pressure plate are broken and the TOB is mangled.

Do I need to replace the TOB sleeve? Mine appears to be in good condition.

If it has a sleeve on it already, and is in good shape, leave it on. Just make sure the TOB doesn't have too much play on the sleeve. It's probably fine though.

On my '91 I found 29mm on one side and 30mm on the other. The 29mm was probably a replacement as I believe my '95 has 30mm axle nuts.

Thanks for the replies.

Another question. Is the only thing holding the TOB on the fork that tiny pin?

Also, is the passenger side axle one piece or can I just replace just the CV shaft, mine is gone and the previous owner wired a bag over it.

The TOB pin is for assembly purposes only. Once things are together, it does absolutely nothing.

Ive had them break and foul up the works during install before, so I prefer to use a small zip tie on all of the clutch jobs I do.

Finally making some progress. I dropped the oil pan and cleaned up all the sludge on the outside. The inside was nice and clean. Flywheel is on. Tomorrow I install the clutch and trans. Hopefully by the weekend, I can be driving it.
