clutch pedal clunk sound

My 89 clutch pedal makes a noticable clunk / thump sound near the bottom of the travel. If I depress it repeatedly about 30 times, it goes away but after sitting a few weeks it returns. The cable bushing at the trans looks fine; what should I look for ? I have a new OEM clutch cable on the shelf and will try that. Car has 149k
