Clutch job on hold....guy says......

well the guy doing my clutch said that i need to have my tranny rebuilt. He said i need a reverse gear synchro.....but i thought my car did not have one....He also said he would rebuild it for $1500. I don't know if its worth it. I was hoping that by just putting my SPEC stage 3 clutch in, turning the flywheel, and installing a ceramic throw-out bearing would fix my hard shifting problems and no reverse. Does this sound like an internal problem? I need to know what to do asap because the car is just sitting at the guys shop. If its gonna be to expensive i might just sell the car as is. Any offers? I just bought another car and can't blow money on them both.

These cars have no reverse gear syncro - get the tranny back!!! Unless you are having trouble shifting in the forward gears (grinding into 2nd or 3rd) your tranny is fine. Hard shifting is generally a sign of the clutch going in one way or another.

Terry's right. The SHO's gearbox does not have a synchro on reverse and that shop is trying to milk you for money. That or they don't have a clue. Either way, do you want your baby in their hands?

You mention in the opening post that you were hoping that the new clutch kit would fixed the hard shifting problems and no reverse. So are you saying that there's no reverse gear? Just curious as the mechanic might have made a mistake in relaying the correct parts to rebuild your tranny. No reverse synchro but maybe the mechanic means you need a gear. Either way, $1500 sounds like a lot to do a complete rebuild. Especially given that several parts are discontinued. If money is an issue, you might be better off installing a used MTX. I'm sure one can be had for under $1500!!

Hold on guys. While reverse does not have a synchro per-say, reverse does share 5th synchro. If there is a problem with 5th synchro you can have difficulty with reverse or completely lose reverse. This I know from my own personal experience.

James, give me more details on what's happening and why he says you need this part. If need be I'll call and talk with him.

P.S. He is charging way too much money for the job. I could do the work for much less if you need me to.

Reverse also has an idler gear. When Josh T installed my Quaife, he found that the idler gear was completely chewed up and reverse would soon be impossible to engage. It is caused by constantly grinding the tranny into reverse. He got me one of the last ones available from Ford as they have been obsolete for a long time. I don't know about aftermarket sources though.

Since your tranny is out, have it disassembled and make them show you what parts need replacing. These things are too expensive too get ripped off on.
