i have been lurking for about 2 months now after buying my '95 sho mtx and it has caused me nothing but trouble. first i had my clutch fail, then alternator burned out, and then the 60k maintenance never happened (now at 118k) so i replaced the timing belt, crankshaft position sensor, and valve cover gaskets. now i have noticed that when i shift into 5th gear the clutch chirps. what i would like to know is what might cause this?

What clutch did you replace the old one with? Did you replace just the disc or everything involved?

SHOs are great when maintained. One of the biggest mistakes in buying a sho is not knowing the history or not buying from a enthusiast. If the body is not filled with rust you should have a good dependable car once you get everything up to date.

Did you break in the clutch after the install? 400-500 miles of city driving without getting on it too hard? Did you have the flywheel surfaced?

It more than likely has some inconsistency in the clutch surface and just needs to be driven. Being a Duralast clutch, its more than likely made in China and not going to be the best quality. If its not grinding or slipping then drive it and see if it gets better with more miles.

Yes I did break it in for a little over 1000 miles driving it to work and back. However this morning it slipped a little going into 4th. If it is starting to slip how long can I expect it to hold out for me before I have to replace it with something else, also what would you recommend I replace it with for under $500 in parts?

before you condem the clutch for slipping, consider that a sticky throw-out bearing can slow the engagement of the clutch.
unfortunately, the fix is about the same for either the clutch or bearing.

does it slip on long hills?

You have not mentioned any vibration. I was thinking maybe the pressure plate bolts were backing out (if no locktite), but I would have thought a little vibration would have accompanied that.
Take the starter out and have a peek.
Your location pins were re-installed, and all your pp bolts bottomed out and were torqued correctly?

The standard garden variety clutch kit such as Rhinopak does not slip (as I have one), so unless there is something wrong with your flywheel (glazed or oil soaked), I am out of ideas.

If you downshift aggressively, it is possible to break the straps, but I do not know what symptoms that would show.

I have never worn a clutch disc out, but have had lots of TOB / pressure plate fingers problems, but not after 1000 miles.

I would check out those things and check out that there are no snags affecting the cable and keep driving it.
