When I'm driving and if I go over a bump, hit a *** hole or something I hear a clunking noise coming from my passenger rear side.. It sounds like some thing is loose in the trunk but I went and investegated and found nothing. I checked the suspension,in the trunk I looked at anything it could be and nothing is broke or out of place... Plus it rained this morning on my way to work and I noticed it today when I was leaving work. Maybye its form the rain.. Any info would be aprreciated Thanks thumbs_u

first I would check your sway bar, then check the tie rod ends. Take off wheel and grab a hold of the strut and wiggle it feeling for and play. Also you can lift up that side and grab ahold of the wheel while it is still on car and grab it at 3o'clock and 9o'clock and wiggle in and out....just a little tip not sure if I am much help, good luck! wink

If the sound is coming from the area directly below the seat belt mounts on the package tray (at the base of the C pillar), your upper strut mounts are shot.

I have the same problem on my '89. If it is the strut mounts, how easily are these replaced?

Derek and bradman:

Struts have to come out, disassemble, replace upper strut mounts, put back in. Relatively easy to replace...must have, or borrow, a coil spring compressor if doing it yourselves.

Just one thing to check--My old 89 had a loose caliper on it it would rattle and clunk like crazy simple fix by tightening bolt. Worth a try.

Thanks I'll check it out!!!!!!!
I have the noise only when my tank is empty?
Does the noise happen when your gas tank is full or empty?
If Your strut mounts are good, look to see if your pump or baffle inside the tank is loose.
Good luck!

Not that your not checking enough already, but it could also be that the ground effects trim is coming loose. Check to see if your missing any push pins at the rear.

Same thing happened to me. I was on the George Washington bridge and anyone who has ever been on it knows the condition. I hit a pothole and the rear swaybar link kit broke. That is, one of the bushings broke off of it. Because of that my strut went bad. They were brand new Sensatrac II, police struts (you can't get them anymore.) But regular Sensatrac struts are about $60, you can always get cheaper struts for $30-40. Sensatrac's ride nice though. Good Luck.
