"Clunk" Noise In Reverse. Sometimes in 1st and 2nd.

When ever I start backing up in the morning and give the SHO a little gas, there's a "clunk" noise.

I'm thinking motor mount but I haven't driven the car hard at all!

Anyway, if it is a MM, how do I replace it? I'm asuming I'll have to jack the motor up a little. I remember doing that to change the SFB's.

Don't forget that you have axles and they, too, clunk.


Before assuming it's the mounts, perform the motor mount test. Put your emergency brake on, and give a slight accel in reverse and forward. A good mount will keep the engine from traveling up more than one and a half inches or so. Look at the front of the engine in forward, and the rear on reverse.

or you can simply put in park if auto, or in gear if mtx, and rock the car forward and back.
does it do it only when you hit the gas in reverse, or does it do it when you first put it in gear, the reason I ask is because if its when you first put it in gear you can have somebody put in gear while you look. I dont recommend checking it if its when you hit the gas!!! dont forget to check your subframe bushings. for that you might have to get a crow bar and pry down to see if theres any play.

have you had the recall done on the subframe mounts?

The recall was done and I have aluminum SFB's. I never thought of checking the SFB's though, THANKS!

It only does it if I give the car a little gas while backing up. If I just ease the clutch up, there's no noise.

I'll do the MM and bushing test today and see what's what.

Ok, while holding the brake and letting up on the clutch in reverse, the motor moves about 1 1/2-2 inches. In 1st, hardly any movement.

Sounds like a MM, right? If so, I'm just going to replace it in a few weeks when I do the PS pump. No sense in doing the job twice!

Yeah, sounds like the rear mount is toast.

Get some reinforced mounts (or reinforce a set yourself). Better shifting, better throttle response, lower likelihood of breaking something else when a mount fails (DIS, exhaust...), etc...

ok i have a MM out and i cant figure what one it is. in reverse even if i am backing up really slowly or if i am backing up any incline the motor will flop vigorusly, and if i am going about 15mph and put it in first and dont give it any gas(downshifting) it will do it again. and i had my dad give it gas and hold the brake and i went under the car in the pit and i could not tell which one it was. i did look at the tranny mount and it looks like some of the rubber bushing is ripping away.. any help greatly appreciated! :thankyou:
