All three of those things happened within a ten minute span today. I was cruisin' along in 3rd or 4th gear and all of a sudden I hear/feel a huge huge clunk, I don't even know what to compare it to... maybe the motor stalling at 40 - 50 mph with the car in gear. My first thought is maybe it's a transmision problem, but all the gears shift through just fine and as a matter of fact the clutch has gotten easier to push in and the car goes into gear with less effort. So I pulled over to see what was up and thre's some smoke rising from the back of the motor and there's no doubt that it's oil smoke. I look underneath and see that the oil's dripping onto the exhaust pipe but doesn't seem to be coming from the motor itself. When I look closer though I see that there's a good coat of oil on the oil pan as well. My one fear was that maybe something went wrong with the transmission? Leaking gear ****? I dunno, because it certianly smells like oil but I don't know what burning trans **** smells like. Anyone had anything at all similar to this happen? I drove maybe 10 miles after the loud clunk and now the oil is just below the full mark  ... anyway, I know chances are I'll have to roll under the car to see what's up... but as far as I can tell the oil is coming from the rear of the engine, maybe towards the driver's side. Any ideas? Also, I didn't get any warning lights or anything, etc. I'm baffled.

Thanks in Advance.

EDIT: Also... are there any oil hoses that run back there? Oil cooler? Thanks.

Check the level of the transmission fluid.

Since that much oil didn't seem to come from the engine, it had to have come from the tranny.

If you can, park your car overnight and put white paper, cardboard, or cloth under it. The color of the oil stains in the morning will tell alot about what is leaking.

95SHOdude: Ooops hit the wrong key. I really hate to say what happened to me with the same systems but here goes. I was diving heard a "bang" the car bucked but it seemed to run fine. Gears shifted etc. just like you described. I was close to home (few blocks) so I just drove it home. Later I found the problem. That damn trans pin thing. Yup pin gave way in the diff and put a hole in my tranny. The tranny is filled with a form of oil (90-100 weight I think) so it leaked out slowly through the whole in the top of my tranny on the driver side. The only good thing was it was still under waranty so it was fixed for free. On another occasion the power stearing hose blew and it smelled like oil. There wasn't any noise just the smoke from dripping on the Cats. Good luck.

The power steering idea was something I thought could be a possibility too, but I didn't think it would've caused such a noise. If this is the end of my tranny then where could I look to get one and how much am I gonna spend? Being this winter and cold and it being that I have about $300 to my name, I think this, sadly, might be the end of the SHO. shrug :(

It sounds to me like you may have blown your diff. When you check the fluid under the car, do look at it, but smell it also. Some times if it's been in there awhile it can turn a darker color and look like oil in a way. Trans fluid has a sickening sweet odor to it.

I sure hope it's not the diffy for your and the car's sake. Good luck and keep us posted.

Well, I put some cardboard underneath it then pulled it out later and looked and it looked like the mystery fluid had dripped in 3 or 4 different places and then ran down hill a little bit. Tried to smell it and doesn't smell like any kinda oil to me anyway. Almost had a kerosene-ish smell to it. Anyway I'll get under the car tommorow and look closer. This really doens't look good. shrug

Well... after searching through some other posts I'm almost completely sure that it's a diff pin. Closer inspection will tell for sure.
Burnout w/stock diff = SHO Boom
I read that several times and thought "that'll never happen to me" heh, I was so wrong. I think the previous owner beat on this car a little too much. ****, maybe I did.

Oh well, it looks like I need to go the used tranny route. Is there any way to replace the pins in a used trans before I install it to prevent this again? This is the last damn thing I need... Merry ******' Christmas to me.

What kinda prices do a used tranny run? How much of a bitch to replace? Motor come out? Is a new clutch absoloutly neccessary?

Anyone on here bought a junkyard/used tranny? Care to share thier experience?

What did it cost?

How long to install?

A new clutch absoloutly neccessary?

It's winter and snowy and miserable here and the SHO is my only car and I need to get something figured out.

Well... I've been knows to do the occasional burnout... and I'm positive the previous owner did some. But yeah, I hadn't driven it hard all day... and then SHO Boom.

Welcome to my world. I got what sounds like the same clunk sound come out of my tranny just before the clutch started to smoke something fierce. Shortly after it simply disintegrated. I should have my tranny out by this weekend and am hoping that only the clutch is bad.

bad news...if it is your diff pin, more than likely the tranny case is cracked.

Look for any holes or cracks on the drivers side top of the tranny approx. 4 O'clock position.

I have seen a few SHOs blow diff pins and this is where the case usually breaks.

The car will run/ drive fine but leaking tranny oil will drip out onto the manifold and burn off..causing a wonderful white smoke show when your driving.
