Inheriting my uncles 93 (believe its a 93) Ford Taurus SHO [Automatic], thats been in storage for about year now. He said the only thing wrong with it is one of the catalytic converters are clogged. Anybody know about how much about how much a new or used catalytic converter will cost? I also seen some additive that suppose to clean your converter on autobarn, anybody know if this stuff works?

Thanks,
Jae

A high flow performance one will be less money than OEM. Call an exhaust shop and ask around, price to remove both cats and replace them with some decent ones. Best to replace them both if one has failed.

The cats shouldn't be more than 100 each. It will cost some labor to install them also. That is if you can't do it yourself.

Just call up a shop and ask how much the cheapest one is that can fit in your ride, you might be surprised. Most rates around here to install are $30 or so for each. IIRC, I was going to get some through Jegs, though not advertised in the mag, for like $60/each. I think they were DynoMax.

You will also need to determine WHY the converter became clogged in the first place. Was the car running rich due to a failed O-2 sensor, which would over a period of time cause a converter failure? You could have a rich condition due to a clogged air filter, poor spark plugs, poor plug wires, an IAB problem, and a few other things. The point is that you simply cannot just change the converter(s) without determining the cause of the failure.

If you replace the converter(s) and do nothing else you will possibly have to get the converters replaced again. It is a matter of time. If you cannot afford to maintain the car maybe you should consider selling it.

Or, you can post in the WTB section for a "used" OEM y-pipe with good converters.....I know there is some out there. Be specific as in it is for the ATX.
