clearing codes

ive replaced my cam sensor almost 3 times now, and for some reason my car keeps taking a crap on me, and once i replace the sensor, it drives for a day or two well. a friend told me i should have my codes cleared, is this true?

Just disconnect the battery and turn the lights on. Wait a minute and reconnect everything. It can't hurt. But if the code is coming back there is still a problem.

To clear the codes, you need to run the EEC test (KOEO) and wait for the codes to start flashing on the CHECK ENGINE light. When they are flashing, pull the jumper from the EEC TEST plug. Codes cleared.

Now, about your car's defication problem. Even if the codes aren't cleared, it wouldn't cause a problem with the engine control system. It sounds like you have a problem you aren't addressing. What were the codes that you found and what are the symptoms that are causing your car to be a problem?

The CID (cam) sensor will make the car start in a very ugly way (backfiring), but won't **** the engine. The crankshaft position sensor (CPS) on the other hand, will cause all spark to cease and immediately drop the tach to zero when it fails. For our '91s, code 14 indicates the CPS has failed. Code 19 points to the CID sensor. Try this site if you don't yet have a reference for the EEC tests and code descriptions. The link to the 2-digit codes is near the top of the page.
