I had the intake off a couple of weeks ago and noticed something rather disturbing...the ports where the secondaries once resided are disgusting. There's massive carbon buildup on both the port and the valves, and I even wonder if the valves are able to close all the way.

this was caused because when I bought the car, the IRCM cable had broke for who knows how long. When I got the cams welded, I replaced it, and you shouldve seen the cloud of black smoke. I'm sure people near FPS thought I had a diesel Taurus the first time we put the pedal on the floor.

anywho, can I safely spray something down there and let the crap fall into the cylinder and out the exhaust or am I looking at a very intense cleaning project?

If it was me I would use some carb cleaner/brake cleaner and a vacuum. Break up the carbon while the valves are closed on that cylinder and vacuum it out, then move on tho the next cylinder. Beware of explosive fumes in the vacuum though....

There have been engines trashed because the valves stuck. And I would not let any large chunks pass through the motor.

I've been curious about this as well. A nice set of brushes is on my list. I should probly get working on it soon as my head will be in the shop very soon. I plan on using some b12 spray to get most of it. And I used the vaccum method before when I did a ruff cleaning and it worked well. I would like a stronger vacuum though :)

Here's what can happen if the valve sticks open because of carbon buildup. A catch can stops this buildup from forming.

That's scary. anyone know of a great write up for a catch can? Not real expensive but real easy to do and a great spot so its not noticable.....have been wanting one for awhile hopefully when the sho breaths again. I can put one of them on.

The catch can on the v8 is easy. Get the $20 ebay cans and just put it in line between the PCV hose and the PCV valve.

Do not get one that is vented.
