Ok, so on my way back from Performance plus, after driving for about 4 hours I get caught up in construction traffic. As I start to accellerate slowly I start hearing this clacking sound from the front right side of the car, it's not really loud, but is rythmic with the acceleration.
It sounds like how a noisy lifter sounds, but it only makes noise when I am accellerating and between about 2k and 4k rpms?
And when I left off the gas or decelerate it doesn't make a sound?
I took a friend of mine for a ride and he thinks it's possibly something with the vacuum lines near the firewall...he said that something may have come loose during the process of the 60k or something?
I don't notice any problems with performance, just the noise.
All the rattles are gone from the car, thanks to Doug at PP. I changed my oil tonight and couldn't see anything loose...but still heard it?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
T

You will have to pinpoint the source using a mechanic's stethoscope or some other improvised substitute.

Sounds exactly like the problem my friend has with his 89 right now. Haven't had time to look at the problem but I drove it and it seems to make that "clacking" noise after about 3K whenever you press the accelerator more than just a little bit. If you really romp on the pedal it doesn't seem to make the noise at all. The same with decelerating at any RPM's it just doesn't make the noise. He was quite low on oil, so the first thing was rod bearings or something to that affect, but it would be making the noise all the time. If you figure this out before I get a chance to really look at his problem definitely let me know. BTW I stuck my head under the hood to listen and had him make the noise reoccur at 3K rpms but it was hard to hear with all the engine noise. But to me without using a stethoscope it sounded more like it was coming from the lower engine side towards the tranny. Have to look into it more when I have some time. Good luck finding that out!

A mechanics stethoscope really works wonders in pinpointing where noise is coming from. It takes all the additional noise your ears hear out of the equation. $8.99 at Advance...cheap enough, and well worth every penny.

I'm definitely going to have to add that to my "to buy" list. But my new air compressor came first! :)

I know Doug does great work, but if that Harmonic damper didn't get torqued properly that would be your crank pulley and woodruff key making noise. I would also check to make sure it wasn't a silly mistake like putting the timing belt on backwards or mis-tensioning it.

Well I've looked things over and nothing is visibly wrong that I can tell. I'm not an expert though.
Strange thing...when I am driving it, I hear it as I accelerate, not decelerate. But when I rev the engine, not moving, I don't hear it at all. Even when I rev the engine and I'm moving, with clutch engaged I don't hear it.
Hmmm...... headbang
