i have a 93 3.2. I have taken my alternator in to have it tested and it comes back ok. put it back on and start the car and its reading 14.5 volts. let it run for awhile and it stops putting out. any ideals???
Tested where? I have seen a few test fine on the bench at Autozone & still not work correctly. Usually do that test right out of the box to eliminate a straight up dead alt but that isn't always a definite green light that it will perform on the car.
I would look at easy stuff first like corroded battery terminals, and do a wiggle test on the wiring with the voltmeter when you notice it not working right. Best guess is worn brushes or faulty diode inside. If you get a parts store reman unit keep the receipt. They have a high failure rate.
Had it tested at advanced and orileys. Seems to quit when the engine heats up. Is it possible somthing is failing when its hot. And could a dead battery make it miss and run poorly? Checked codes and had a coolant temp sensor problem but I fixed that and it still runs funny.
Best bet is to have your alternator rebuilt. Next best to get a remann'd Motorcraft alternator. After that, consider something with a lifetime warranty like NAPA Premium.
lots of electrical things can work fine cold and not work hot. (think crank sensors...) so, it sounds like that is your issue.
the only alternators that I found to last were NAPA lifetime warranty ones. I have probably bought around 15 over the years, and all the others would fail, usually within a few months after the warranty expired...
replaced the alternator and fixed the charging problem. Still having running issues. I have no codes. seams to sputter and an occasional pop out the exhaust when I first start it up. and when I let off the accelerator the front end dives hard. seems to run good a higher RPMs.
