Heyy guys, i was going to have my tranny flushed by NESHO while it was in for the cam service. however, I was told by someone that changing the tranny fluid in a high mileage car can make it shift worse. is that true?

EDIT: sry for the f*ck up in the title

Im guessing you are talking about an ATX? If so ive heard several different things my parents had a 95 taurus wagon and they changed the fluid and then the tranny went. But then again ive heard of ppl changing the fluid at 200k and nothing happen so its kind of a toss up.

just pull the dipstick, and if its extremely black and smells burnt then i wouldnt do it, but if its kinda black and doesnt smell too bad its probably been changed and just needs changed again. BTW its supposed to be red and not smell burnt, so if its that then it doesnt need changed

I posted it here in the V8 section so it wouldnt be confused with a Gen I or II with the manual tranny.

The tranny fluid isn't black or anything like that, just needs a change soon. I am just trying to judge what I NEED to have done versus what I want, I dont have allot of money to spend so Im trying to delete the unnecessary stuff in case Kirk finds something thats broken.

I was just trying to get some insight on that odd statement about it not being good to change the fluid b/c it sounded weird to me.

Old.

Wives.

Tale.

Actually, if you search the forum for 'old wives tale' I believe I've gone into more detail of this urban myth in the past some time.

interesting, i'll have to look up that archived thread.

the whole thing sounded fishy to me, but i dont know those things so I figured the infinite wisdom off the SHO ppl would solve my quarrel

EDIT: yup, did a search along those guidelines and found Chris saying the same thing a while ago among other ppl agreeing.

I dont know if this is the same tale or its being confused with the stated question, but I think its the power flushes that can f-up an auto tranny. Stuff gets forced where it shouldn't with the pressure that is used.

maybe that could be the story, i was told pretty much what was stated in my first post and it was overly vague: changing the tranny fluid. power flushing seems a much more likely cause for problems though.

My tranny fluid looked fine, I changed it all and put a new filter on it last march. It ran solid, no slipping for a couple months, but is again back to it's old habits.

I don't really know what to tell you, as the fluid is not cheap.

I will just change it this summer. I think Im gonna have the tranny serviced in August. I would like to know how everything looks once the pan is dropped. Im not worried about it, just heard that little tale and figured I would run it past you guys.

My tranny acts weird shifting from first to second and then shifts seamlessly through the remaining gears. Its sometimes either a hard 1st-2nd shift or a delayed response. Im pretty sure that I will be putting a tranny in the car in the next year or so, but Ill tackle that when it breaks.

Yeah, same here with the 1st-2nd shift. It's done it since I bought it, it will drive fine until the redline and then let go and bounce of the rev limiter. That's how I know thing's aren't up to par in the transmission.

Needless I found that out when I was unwelded and barely push it past 5k anymore. Not saying I don't, as the sounds the car makes are addicting with Borla's.

I have red lined the car before, felt the need to have a little fun on occasion. I havent been pushing it at all the past month or so b/c of this cam welding business. I always have taken it easy until the car shifts into 2nd and then will push it, the acceleration from like 30-100 is great.
