Is there a write up on how to change the fluid for the ps? My ps pump all of a sudden just start having a whining sound to it which is annoying.

remove PS cooler, remove both hoses & point them in a container. get 2 helpers, 1'st helper starts car & slowly turns steering wheel lock to lock, 2nd helper pours new PS fluid into reservoir then you watch as fluid flows out into container & stop when your satisfied.

Cool! That sounds so easy. The ps cooler that you're refering to is the one in the front at the bottom by the radiator? If that is, I thought that was for the xmission. But what could be causing my whinning sound?

Just flushed mine.
Grab a 3/8th clear tube about 6 foot.
Grab a gallon or two of Type F ATF. I used Castrol. Also get some Lucas PS fluid.
Get a 3/8th double barb fitting I used plastic.
Pull the small return line from ps resevoir and have a plastic cup underneath to catch the run off. Then place a a few inches of tube there to keep it from leaking out and clamp it. I used vice grips. Now hook up the rest of the tubing to the double barb and the return line.
Use a funnel to pour the ATF into the resevoir. You'll need a friend to start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth while you fill the reservoir. Be careful it goes quick. Once the fluid begins to turn red and not some nasty black color, shut the car off.
Hook all back up and fill with the rest of the ATF but leave room in the reservoir for about 12oz of the Lucas PS fluid. This will help with the whine and give you some time before replacing the ps pump. Good luck and be carefull. I'm not responsible for your F up.

Is type F trans fluid the same as PS fluid? I have hears of running ATF fluid in your gas tank to help remove build up, and I think someone recommended usinf a quart in your old for a short interval before an oil change. Seems like pretty handy stuff.

No it is not. The SHO uses atf in the ps system NOT power steering fluid.

That's the method I use to flush the system. It's a lot easier to disconnect the return line at the PS reservoir than disconnecting the lines at the PS cooler. While I was at it, I installed a Magnafine in-line filter in the return line. I located it just above the PS cooler where there is plenty of open space.

I flush the system with a gallon of cheap Dexron ATF from Walmart or Advance auto, then switch to Type-F ATF to finish the flush and fill the reservoir since that's the fluid ford specifies.

So let me get this straight. Dis connect the return hose, which is the small hose, off the ps resovoir. Once I do that, connect a plastic hose to it so that it could drain in a bucket. Start the car and have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock so that as I pour I pour dexron atf into the dirty fluid. As this is going on, the dirty fluid us going to drain out the return hose then its going to turn red when the old fluid is out. When that's done, continue to let the dexron atf run out so that you could fill resovoir up with type f atf. Then I want to leave room for a 12oz bottle of lucas oil. Did I miss anything?
Two questions. Why can't I just drain the old fluid out then put the atf fluid in? Is it so I won't let air in the lines? Also, you said ford recommend atf fluid for ps fluid instead of ps fluid?

you can us ps or atf

but you need to drain the line completely if not it will not be clean

and youre supposed to stop just before the end off the curve before the lock

and you need to be fast lol to turn the wheel and to fill the reservoir too

ok you can use either ps or atf

you need to completely drain the line the reservoir and the complete line

and when you are filling the reservoir side "Start the car and have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock you need to stop before the lock it not good for the inner seal and some other crap i dont remember

and the guy that turn the wheel need to be fast and the guy filling the reservoir need to be fast too lol

Check your Owner's Manual. The Ford specified fluid for the PS system is Type-F ATF, not some other kind of PS fluid. Will it make any difference...probably not, but who knows? When I flush with Dexron, the last quart of the flush is switched over to Type-F ATF, then I reconnect the return line and top off with Type-F.
