No, take the drain plug out of the drain pan. The filter is above the starter, and above the oil pan, which means most of the oil won't make it out. I believe the drain bolt is a 1/2" or 9/16" of an inch, but don't quote me on that. Just set the drain pan under there, and open the bolt. Crank it free with a wrench, and if the engine's cool, use your fingers to undo it... You'll get a little oil on you, but it's better than digging it out of a pan of dirty oil. After it stops trickling, THEN pull the filter carefully, as to not spill anything on the starter.
