Is is recommended to change the oil filter by loosening the filter and letting the oil drain all over the starter? This seems like it could cause problems later.

Thanks

No, take the drain plug out of the drain pan. The filter is above the starter, and above the oil pan, which means most of the oil won't make it out. I believe the drain bolt is a 1/2" or 9/16" of an inch, but don't quote me on that. Just set the drain pan under there, and open the bolt. Crank it free with a wrench, and if the engine's cool, use your fingers to undo it... You'll get a little oil on you, but it's better than digging it out of a pan of dirty oil. After it stops trickling, THEN pull the filter carefully, as to not spill anything on the starter.

Although draining the oil in the pan first will prevent most of the oil from running onto the starter, the filter will hold about a half quart, therefore some of this oil will end up on the starter unless you cover it.
