any time i am at idle or hit traffic for ten plus minutes car water temp raises. if i don't turn the heat on high it will overheat past normal on gauge. but even with heat on high any sitting or not moving a 20 minutes or longer same thing.now i replaced the radiator, thermostat, water pump and the fan does come on when temp is about half way.. i even had my mechanic flush the coolant system for about a whole day and a lot of brown liquid came out.. i then had him put a radiator flush in after the all day flush and still nothing fixes the problem i have a 94 mtx with close to 190k i put a ton of money and car runs and drivers perfect except for that please help.

take your thermostat out and run it for a couple of days without it. see what happens. if it still overheats, find someone with a laser thermometer and take a few readings.

Are you actually overheating or does the gauge show you're in the red zone? If it's the latter I would suggest TOOLMAN and SUPERHO's suggestions.

if anything, it'll run low on the cool side. If it heats up past the "O" in Normal, then something else ain't right.

Also, I'm with stupid up there who mentioned replacing the radiator cap. The coolant system relies on a certain level of pressure inside it, and if there's not enough pressure for whatever reason, then the coolant'll boil and it'll reduce the ability to actually cool the engine.

Quesrtion; are you running an underdrive pulley on your water pump ? also iF the cooling system is all good, it runs hot if running lean; are you runnning a stock MAF or aftermarket / chip ?

Two things are needed. Water flow and air flow. The water MUST circulate freely through the engine AND the radiator. Like SuperHO suggested, take out the thermostat for a day or two and see if it runs way cool. If it then runs cool, thermostat is not working properly. If nothing changes, check next two items.

Poor water flow through radiator: Disconnect both radiator hoses from engine. Wrap duct tape around garden hose until it's about the right size and hose clamp it inside the bottom radiator hose. Direct top hose into bucket and turn on garden hose. See if any debris comes out. If a lot comes out, your radiator is clogged and it would be cheaper to just buy a new one. If water comes out without any debris and flows well, see next item.

Remove radiator and check for dirt and leaves on the fins. Wash off with garden hose and reinstall.

Good luck.

Water flow and air flow.

I had a similar problem. The engine wasn't overheating, but it was running a little warmer than I felt comfortable with. It seems the excess coolant will go from the radiator to the overflow BUT NOT from the overflow tank into the radiator.

If that was the case, there is an air leak somewhere. Either a cracked bottle, bad rad cap, or a bad fit on the bottle-to-radiator tube.

I just want to say i replaced the radiator five days ago and when my mechanic flushed the engine out without radiator with a hose for about two days it was very dirty and he said that there was not enough water coming out from were the thermostat is. and the thermostat out its was not coming out with much pressure it was pouring out not flowing out...and the coolant looked very brown and rusty and it kept coming out even after almost two of flushing. so i know were the problem is.. just dont know how to fix it... By the way the water pump is about 7 months old. like i said i replaced everything and ran out of options...Please any ideas thanks

If you have alot of brown fulid coming out perhaps you put in some stop leak and that is why it is brown..Im just wondering if the heater core is plugged up..Bypass it and check the temp reading again?
