The CHECK ENGINE light is your friend and is trying to tell you what is wrong with your engine control system. Follow the links at the bottom of my signature to learn how to do the simple key on engine off (KOEO) and key on engine running (KEOR) tests. You will need to run the KOEO test to retrieve the error code(s) that was set into the memory section when the light illuminated. It is simple to run the test once you have figured it out and it is a great tool to help keep your engine running at its best. I have posted more details on this process just recently.
