Cel 214 f### me!

95 mtx 53,*** miles upper 60k done as I was driving today she started bucking on me and the tach went to 0 completely stopped working.I drove to the nearest parking lot shut her off and tried to start again. It took 3-4 tries to get it to start and once it did it stumbled all over itself and then finally came back, the check engine light is on this whole time. I went home and parked the car and got the truck to finish out the work day. Got home and took the car to my buddys shop to run the codes all that we could get was the 214 code. I have searched the code on here and to my knowledge it is either a DIS, cam sensor or the crank sensor. I am wondering which one would affect the tach, and if I can narrow it down by that. To my knowledge none of the above mentioned parts have been changed, I have sunk a lot of money into this car to get it up to ***** and would like narrow it down as much as possible. Any help would be awesome:thankyou:

All of the grounds are intact and secure. The dis plugs are firmly connected and I have cleaned the maf sensor. I did read in one post that the cam sensor runs the tach but would like someone to confirm this before I spend any more money thanks

Is it possible to clean the dis? Or is that not an option?

No the electronics are potted in a silicone sticky gel, but you can make sure there isn't any grease or dirt on the pins of the DIS or the slots on the two connectors.

Sounds like a cam sensor to me. There is a write up on the shophoenix site to replace. You'll want to check the seals. Alot of failures are due to oil gumming up the works behind the sensor.

Ordered the cam sensor today going to get it after work and put it on hopefully it fixes my problem.

Ok so went and picked up the cam sensor and came home to install. Was not quite sure how I was going to go at this so I took out the battery and located the sensor. I was just able to sneak my hand past the engine dampner to reach the two bolts for the sensor got the rear out no problem the front one looks like someone had already rounded it off so I tried a couple different sockets with no luck. Thankfully my buddy had a 5.25 socket that bites into the head as it loosens I am not quite sure what they are called but it worked awesome. Got the sensor off and a handful of dust and dirt came falling out cleaned the area and put the new one on got it all back together and she runs like a dream. I know I should of checked the seal but I plan on doing a front 60k this winter and the car doesn't see everyday driving. So glad she's running normal

If you didn't see oil behind the sensor then the seal is doing its job. When I took mine out you could see lots of oil.

Yeah I pretty much figured if there wasnt any there that it would be ok for a while. What a PITA that is to get at that thing thankfully I have the hands of a 5 year old and was able to squeeze in there.
