Hi. The CE light in my 94 ATX is coming on, almost always on the highway after driving under mordertly 'hard' (high rpm but not redlining) driving. It will continually come on for about a minute, go off for about 5-10 seconds, and then repeat. Just wanted to know if any of you guys knew what could be the problem (last time I went to AutoZone they didn't find anything but I could try again). Also, I'm going to drive 350 miles tomorrow before I could check it--would this be harmful for the engine? Thanks for all help

Probably either O2 sensors or EGR problems.

Read the codes. Maybe the drones at AutoZone can read them for you. Unless you happen to get a real, experienced moolighting mechanic or an accomplished hobbyist, don't beleive any diagnosis they give you. Write down the codes and post them back here for discussion.

It is very easy to extract the codes yourself. All you need is a short length of wire (a large paperclip would even work), some paper, and a pen or pencil. Instructions are at www.shotimes.com under Care and Feeding or at http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

Good luck,

Steve

I ran the KOEO test and recieved 72 and 73 (probally 172 and 173)...HEGO sensor indicates system lean (RH) and HEGO sensor indicates system rich (RH)...does that mean new 02 sensors? Will that solve my problem? Can I drive it 350 miles and be all good? thanks

yep, your O2s are probably shot.

Same exact problem with mine, and I have been driving it like this for, oh, about 8-10000 miles...

your gas milage and power just might not be optimal, but the trip is alright.

You'd better check those codes again and make sure you read them correctly. If the codes really are 172 and 173, the right sensor is the rear bank, but you should change both if they are the same age. They should be changed every 60,000 miles. Get a pair of the Bosch 15716 from AutoZone for $49.00.

You might want to disconnect the neg. lead to the battery for 10 mins. or so to clear the past codes set, and then get '94 to full operational temp. , read the codes again..or after they are thrown again..then you won't get the whole nine yards of them and you can tell which ones they are throwing...
Have a safe trip...if it is o2 sensors, they will just have to wait now won't they..
