You can put it in the ashtray without much work. All that needs to be run is Power, ground, speaker wires, 2 rca's, and an antenna extension to the trunk. From there I just spliced everything into the factory wiring and said good bye to the football's radio.

There may be a kit that will just splice into the factory wiring in the trunk, but I was unaware of it when I did mine in the fall of 05.

nice car BTW :thumb:

Best buy did have dash kits at one time replaced the whole "football" shaped panel as Paul called it. I am sure it was for a Taurus, that shape is pretty much unique to the Taurus.

Those were for non-electronic climate control units. All SHO's have the ECC units. The regular taurus had adjustable manual dials which the kit was built to replace.

There is a Metra wiring kit. I haven't installed my aftermarket headunit yet, but I think the kit # is 70-5715

Right where the ash tray used to flip down. It's very sturdy once it's down in the actual location. I've only had to remove it once since it was installed, which was about a year ago.

NikonPhotos003

All I did was cut out the opening for the cage housing, and install it.

It has 6 speakers, but only the front speakers are split, so some of the hi's go to the tweeters and the lo's to the "mach" mid ranges...

So yes, my eclipse 20* x 4 to the factory wiring works just fine. And for vertical in the glove compartment? I did that with my console before I did it with my ash tray.

Another linky:
Console 5

And after that:
Eclipseradio

Trust me, the ash tray is by far easier than either of those...

EDIT: and I'll tell you why. First, the radio is in an ideal position if you rest your hand on the shifter to change songs/stations/etc, second, the console was only cool if stopped, the football never completely functioned, and fourth the radio is well hidden down in front of the shifter, and below the factory stereo.

Something like this, with the shifter in P
Eclipsemounted

I used bondo, no fiberglass. Looking back on it some glass would have been good to reinforce it in the back, but I didn't get the EATC to function so it was scrapped.

I drove around for over a month and a half with the defrost on hi heat and hi fan. :frown: At least it was in the winter...

I ran wires down the passenger side and through the trunk, and unplugged the factory amp, and cut the harness and wired in LF, RF, LR, RR from the Eclipse into this:

http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/SpeakerWiringColorCoding.htm

Like I said, if their was a bypass kit I was unaware at the time and had to cut the factory wiring harness in the trunk as to hook up my HU to the factory speakers. Not that big of deal if you leave enough to wire resplice the connector back to the wiring. If need be. My connector has about 2" of wire left on it.

The radio removal tools are a couple bucks, at most.

I cut the factory harness/connector off and spliced all of my wires into that. After I ran them from the cab back.

radio removal tool = $4 at walmart... or you could just use a coat hanger or two, or small screw drivers

Yep thats where I got my tools. The radio is still a pain to get out though with those things... at least it was for me.

ok so you do actually have to run the wires back from the trunk? im kinda slow tonight lol is there a place in back to the radio you can cut the harness that runs to the trunk so you actually dont need to go to the trunk? i just wanna run it to my glovebox right beside it

Uh, I dunno. The amp in the trunk has the speaker wires running out of it, and also has two other connectors. One for power and the other for the CD changer, I believe.

I sold the factory amp over a year ago.

Yep, thats where the "radio" sends its signal and the amp outputs that to the speakers. Basically.

Drivers side, behind the wheel well, in front of the changer.

Looks like this:
TaurusAmpclose
TaurusAmp

And no that's not an RCA out, it's for the antenna.
