I have a '92 with JBL sound system (radio and tape player, no CD). The tape player now eats my tapes. I want to upgrade by replacing the radio/tape player with a radio/CD player. Any suggestions on make/model?

Personally, I have had no luck with Sony In dash units. I love their home audio equipment but hate their car audio. Over time the deck scratched all my cd's as it played them. The first Sony deck i bought and used, i had to take back because it quit working. So i then had to buy another, but upgraded to a more expensive one, and still scratches the cd's. I know many people with Alpine decks and they love them and i also had a Clarion in one of my first cars and it was also great! Good luck..What is your price limit?

try and find a factory JBL cd player.... and the wiring (the hard part) and keep it factory looking...... PLUS ther is less chance of someone wanting to steal it!

Kenwood and Alpine units are of very good quality though they can cost a bit more depending on the unit. Pioneer is pretty good as well and Clarior is okay.

I doubt you'll find an Alpine for less than $300, but it would definitely be the best choice for a head unit.
It's what I have had for the past 2 1/2 years, and I love mine! 240W pwnz j00!! :****:

Actually, the stock JBL CD unit isn't that expensive. I found one from a salvage yard for $50. The most expensive piece is the jumper cable and such that you need to connect to the AM/FM/Tape player. To cut costs, I manufactured my own using a wire diagram. It's a great alternative and, personally, I think it sounds great.

The JBL CD player can also be found in 94-96ish Mustangs as well

Actually they were in Mustangs all the way to '99. If you go the slave CD player route try and find the newest on you can. Sony/Ford mand many upgrades to the units through the years and the '98-'99 ones are actually decent units.

Alpine,.. Ebay... nuff said. alpine is best in the regular class of players and yes you could get a damn nice unit for under 300 brand new on ebay. clarian is also nice but the internal amps arent anything to brag about, but you have an amp anyway, so you might look at clarion

Thanks for all the advice. Now I have a new problem. I have narrowed down my choice to an Alpine CDA9827 ( a little more expensive than I planned, but that's OK), but my local installer tell me they can't find a harness that will allow me to retain use of my dashboard mem/vol/seek control buttons. Any suggestions?

Not only cant you use your vol buttons now but they have to bypass the subwoofer so you wont have use of that either, if you have the JBL system. I had this problem in my car and I went back to the stock system, sorry.

You are going to have to forget about thos ebuttons. There is a kit but I dont now where to find it, the stereo hasa to be able to handle a reote. If you really want those buttons, get a remote, its the same thing. The problem is that in order for those buttons t work they need to be connected to the internal of the CD play, not going to happen. I would have the buttons wired for other things though. I replaced mt buttons and have them to turn off and on my fishtanks for one.
