Ok, I have a 95 MTX, and after two weeks of sitting in the cold it had a hard time starting. Its been fine after that, just took it about 30 seconds of turning over to get going.

Now, for the last 2 days it hasn't wanted to turn over at all, at random, now it wont turn over at all. I went out at like 4am yesterday, drove about a mile to the 7/11, turned the car off for about 5min came out and it wouldn't turn over, so I put it in reverse and rolled backwards about 3ft, turn the key and it fired right up. Later that day I drove downtown, went to best buy, came out, fires up, drove to walmart, come out, fires up, get to the apple store, come out, and nothing. All of the lights are on fine in the car, radio, etc., turn the key and all of the lights go out except the dash lights, head lights DONT dim. I checked and cleaned the battery(optima red top) cables, and once again nothing. I then push started the car and drove it to the garage. Turned it off and tried to turn it on again and nothing. (the weather is very cold and wet here at the moment. SLC, raining and snowing off and on)

I can hear a click when I turn the key, one click, that is all, it happens when the clutch is out too, not sure if that means anything, the car wont start with the clutch out.

I just had a new ignition switch put in about 8 months ago, plus I get the click, so I ruled out the ignition and the clutch position sensor thingy.

I'm going to check all of the wiring today at some point and clean up all the grounds. If that doesnt work I will try the hammer :bonk:, on the starter that is, and if that gets it going, then I will just have to get a new starter.

If you have any other suggestions let me know. I have read TONS of posts about cars not starting, have already rules out a few things.

Also thinking about selling it... :theyareontome:

FYI: all of the work on the car has been done buy Arthur since I have owned it, cant remember his forum name at the moment.

Codes? Sounds like maybe a cam sensor. Should probably turn over without starting if that was the case though. Maybe starter or solenoid?

What "new ignition" did you have out in 8 months ago? Ignition cylinder? Ignition switch? The problem sounds like either an ignition switch or starter motor to me. An inspection of the switch would be easier and cleaner to start with and eliminate that possiblity if not the problem. Check this topic for symptoms and procedures for the ignition switch.

There are no codes... I would guess the starter, wacking it with a hammer frees it up.

sorry, meant to put ignition switch. Pretty sure it the motor now, smacking it with a hammer fixed it.

I have TWO lifetime starters. You just never know. I have two cars, so yeah, four starters overall. And let me tell you about how many damned alternators I have!

Make sure you take the bad one in with you when you get it, as that way you won't have to pay the core charge, which is $35 IIRC. I probably don't, though.

I ordered it online, new for half the cost i can get it locally, and that's without including the core charge locally.

I thought of that, I don't have any kind of security system on my car, unless there is something stock on there. But since it turns over after wacking the starter with a hammer, im 110% sure the starter just died.

I hope you get a good one. The rebuilt/reman. units are spotty on quality and have a high return rate back to the store.

I had some online parts get messed up and had to ship stuff back and forth, at my cost, and lost all my price savings and then some...and alot of time waiting for stuff. Made me more judicious about what I'll buy online vs local store I can return things to.

Once you've replaced it, you can take your old one apart and clean the snot out of it...I'd be willing to bet that it can be used again for months once it's cleaned and you can keep it as your spare...

BTW...The 30 seconds of cranking before it starts is probably the CAM sensor. Do yourself a favor...if you don't want to change out the cam sensor right away...don't crank it for more than 4 or 5 seconds at a time. Also, remove the key between cranks.

Its brand new, not rebuilt. Hopefully it will work when it gets here and keep working until I can afford a nice one with a lifetime warranty.

I plan to clean it up, it was put in the summer of 2000, so it should have some life left, it was a very strong starter for the time it has worked, its just gunked up.

As for the cam sensor, I dunno, it has been COLD here, and I hadn't driven it in over 2 weeks, when its in normal day to day use it fires right up with no problems.
