I've seen many topics on SHO engines shutting off and that most have a difficult time getting them to start back up or stay running. Well my problem is that it just dies. It has done it at different conditions and after it dies, I can start it right back up. A couple of times it stalled on me when i was breaking kinda hard and then one time the rpms got down to like 400rpm and then the car just quit. i just got the car from a ford dealership last friday and the car has since been back but to no avail. Does anyone have any insights on what this may be? I havent been able to talk to the dealership to find out exactly what they did to it...if they did anything. Any input would be awesome!!

check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve; verify operation of the fuel pump relay at the relay pack above the radiator fan; verify any check engine codes & check for a PIP fault (cam sensor, perhaps); check the tach while cranking - does the tach move at all when it won't start (or does it start, and then stall right out?)

Has the fuel pump been loud before when priming (turning on the key only, no start) and now is silent? A guy local to me in RI is having the same problem now, and it sounds like his fuel pump went (prior loud prime, now nothing, and his car starts, then dies right out).

Lastly, check for plugged cats.

I'm sure I missed something. Anyone else?

Firstly...Welcome to the forum! We're glad to have you here. You are in the right place if you're having problems.

I see from your profile that you have a '97 SHO. Just FYI...when you have a problem post that info...sometimes we are lazy and don't go to the profile to check that info out. wink

I think you need to find out from the dealership what they did or checked. There are 2 things that a car must have in order to run...fuel and spark. Do you know if they checked this?

I am very unfamiliar with the Gen III SHO so I dare not even try to help because I might give you bad information, but others here will help.

For starters...i am definitely not mechanically inclined so i apologize if i dont exactly understand what anyone is talking about. Next, the problem is that the engine just dies while running, but when i start it back up it is fine. its like a random occurance that happened like three times today. if there are any other details or anything in that sense needed, i'll try to give the best feedback as possible.

thanks

Welcome to the mystery of the SHO. Mine did that a couple times in the 2 years I've owned it, but it would never do it more than once. Last week I was driving slowly in first gear with the defrost on (AC compressor running), I push in the clutch at a stop sign and it dies instantly. THen I restart and it runs fine. So who knows. Yours, I would check the throttle body for a build up of gunk in there. If so get a can of cleaner and clean it out. This helped on my other Ford.

My car did the same yesterday, but the only way I could keep it from stalling after I restarted it was keeping revs above 1,500 rpm and putting it into drive with revs that high.

You all might want to check the idle air bypass valve. If the motor is weak, it will not be able to hold idle up or steady, especially when braking hard and bringing the RPM's down fast.

I'm having the same problesm with my 94 ATX SHO. I will be driving in traffic and the thing will just die or when I brake the RPMs drop down and (usually) come back up but sometimes the car will die...I'm hoping it's the IAB...I'm going to clean that today if I can find "Several (15 to 20) 6" foam tipped swabs with secure heads that won't fall off inside your engine" where can I get those?

I just use Q tips. It's shallow enough that if anything comes off it's really easy to reach and grab it.

If the EGR is plugged there is a good chance that the car will mildly buck while maintaining speed but that could also casue the idle problem.

A vacuum leak is another place to look.

My 93' ATX shuts off once and a while when it shifts UP and then i brake hard...it wants to die, but i just hit the gas quickly....ever sence its been dying off, ive been watching the tach A LOT!!!I read up and did some reasearch and i found out its the oil in my plug wells!! i cleaned the front 3 out in bout 45 min. and the BACK 3 r gonna be a SAturday project cuz they r so cramped!! but i could notice a difference after i cleaned them out!!i dunno..maybe take ur plug wires off and see if there is oil in ur plug wells!! if so, clean the oil out before u remove ur plugs!!
