Great forum! Thanks to everyone who makes this possible!

I have a '93 MTX SHO with 72K on it. Last week the engine fan fried and replaced by a local radiator shop. Yesterday and today, the car periodically stalls when the A/C is on when stopped or stopping. If I turn the A/C off or put it on VENT, the engine doesn't stall. The RPM's drop to about 500 and sometimes will go back up to 900 or 1000 and other times the engine will die.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a shop in the St. Louis area to do the 60K maintenance? Would I be better off taking it to Performance Plus (Madison, WI) and let them do it (going there over the summer for vacation).

Thank you!

Tom,

I know nothing about St. Louis shops or Madison Wis. shops, sorry. I do know that if the activation of the A/C causes stalling, or significant RPM drop, that either the A/C pulley bearing is about to sieze, or the compressor is gunked up and will eventually sieze.

If the pulley bearing were the problem it would put a drag on the engine all of the time. So, based upon the information provided, it would seem likely that you have an A/C compressor that is on its way out! rangerj

Thanks for the information...the past couple of days it hasn't stalled even with the air on...the RPM's drop some when I slow down and have the clutch in but it hasn't killed the engine yet...

Thanks again for the reply!

It was just most likely that the idle had not been reset. The mechanic you took it to most likely disconnected the battery when changing the fan and after doing that you always have to reset the idle and let the computer relearn all the loads that are applied to the car during operation. The procedure for doing this has been explained more than a few times on the forum and I'm sure a search would give you adequate results.

As my sig says.......... Steve Weinrich did my top end 60k about 1 1/2 years ago and has performed additional ones since then. I would highly recommend you get in touch with him. He's on the forum under "projectSHO89" Great guy and has tons of SHO knowledge. Also check the St. Louis discussion under the Regional Club forum. We'd like to schedule a SHO gathering for the first weekend in June.

Betterman, Thanks for the suggestion about resetting the idle.

I did that last night and it appears to be idling a little bit better. Unfortunately, it was 59 degrees this AM when I left for work so wasn't able to run the A/C.

Fricker66, thanks for the information on projectSHO89...

I've read on the forum about the top end 60K and the bottom end 60K...could someone explain the difference between the two?

Thanks again!

Top end - generally refers to the valve lash adjustment, replacing the valve cover seals and spark plug tube seals and anything else that might need to be attended to on the top portion of the engine.

Front(bottom) end - generally refers to the timing belt, front main seal, water pump and CPS replacement. And anything else that needs attention on the front or lower portion of the engine.

Steve has pretty much done it all whether it be on his own 89 or on other SHOs in the area. You'd certainly be better off having him attend to this work vs. a shop in the area which knows nothing of the SHO.

Whereabouts are you in the St. Louis area?
