This is the most fun thing I've ever had happen with this car... NOT
I'll go down the road, and when I put it into neutral or push the clutch in, she dies
but not completely
according to the tach, the car's dead
the car lurches a bit, like she killed
BUT
the rpm's would be around 100 or so under all technicality
and she manages to start up on her own, no intervention on my part
a few times she hasn't done that and i had to sit at the light cranking and cranking... on this note... she needs the gas pedal put to the floor to even attempt to start...?
And I also have a strange ticking/clicking sound from 3K up...

i'll post up a vid to the best of my abilities, but I can't make any guarantees
I'm worried something major is wrong and I cannot put my finger on anything
The car seems to eat throw-out bearings... could it be something funky with that?
any help appreciated :)

IAC maybe? See if you can get some codes. You're car SHOULDN'T start with the throttle too the floor, if it does, then something IS wrong.

As for the ticking sound, could you try and be more specific? Find out where it is coming from? It could be your valve shims that need adjustment.

What do you mean by "eat throw-out bearings"? How many miles do you go before you have to change them...if you're going through them more often than a clutch then I suggest you replace your entire clutch setup, of course I dont know why you wouldn't do that anyways since you are exposing that area while changing the bearing.

Try and get some codes, also info on year/miles/maintenance would be helpful.

The reason the car starts when you put the throttle to the floor is because it was partially flooded. If you crank the car with the gas pedal down it won't pulse the injectors and draws everything from the intake, which is enough to get the car to start. Its basically the opposite of how a Carb'ed car works.

You should be throwing some codes. Id check them. Id also check for a tiny rip in your intake boot between the throttle body and the MAF. Based on the tach description I would also suspect the crank sensor is failing intermittently.

Thats not true, that would be how you clear it if it flooded.. so my guess would be there is some flooding going on there.

x5 for the IAC

well, i couldn't get it to make the sound again
although it did sound like the throw-out bearing noise that i used to have
the best as far as area was right by the trans, so that's my guess
and it didn't throw any codes...

but it doesn't really matter now, as the car seems to have blown a gasket and lost all oil... woohoo for instantaneous rod knock

at least, that's what it sounds like, but we'll see...

If you think it is TOB noise, press the clutch in, if it goes away it is..

well,
i managed to get my butt to work on the car
and i found some interesting stuff
a) penzoil re-used my old oil filter
b) 1 inch of engine sludge
c) all bearing were good except the 5th cylinder
d) no rod bearing in the 5th cylinder
e) absolutely no abnormal wear on the crank

no i'm confused
but it definitely needed a bearing... so i'm glad i did it
but what would cause the car to stop running at idle like that?

Yes it could. Did you ever get a low pressure light? Stop going to penzoil for oil changes. Put some synthetic in there and get that gunk cleared out.

major problem....

i pushed the rod cap onto the fifth cylinder...
then it wouldn't go farther
so i tried to pull it back off and try again
and it wouldn't pull off
a pry bar didn't get it off
and a rubber mallet didn't get it on farther
what do i do, short of strapping some c4 to the car and taking cover?

you should get a hold of luke. I believe he had a spare engine laying around. I know last year he was trying to get rid of it.. he may still have it.

Before installing a new bearing did you plastigage it? Something smells mighty fishy about a random bearing missing.
