Are you using the proper end on the forcing screw to prevent the screw from entering (and potentially damaging) the crank bolt threads?

I just did mine with the autozone damper puller. It comes with the right size bolts to go into the damper, jsut put it on and ratchet it down. It will come off. I dont understand why your timing belt is turning. Put the car in first and wedge a bar between the lug bolts and the ground. Then the pulley/timing sprocket isnt gonna turn anywhere. Perhaps not too helpful, but i dont really understand how one could be unsucessful with a tool that could not be better designed for the job.

The cone thing goes on where the crank bolt was. Then you attach the long (threaded) shaft to the cone, and spin the big funky looking thingey on.

Put the littler bolts THROUGH the bflt, and screw them into the damper so they're tight. You might have to adjust the bflt. MAKE SURE YOU USE 2. (The whole point of this tool is to pull the damper evenly, so it doesn't get stuck/ damage stuff.)

Now when you turn the big shaft (w/a wrench) and hold the bflt still, it pulls the bflt away from the engine, pulling the damper with it.

(Sorry my description sucks, I have no clue what these parts are called, and it's hard to explain without hands-on.)

When you put it back on, put a small amount of lubricant on it so that it slides off the next time.
