Can I bolt up a tranny from a 90 SHO to my 95 both 3.0 of course

I found a SHO in the JY and I wanna get the engine and tranny. 125 for both...I just can't figure out how to get it out of the back of my pickup onto a dolly or even just onto the driveway...
I know...I'll disassemble it in the truck and take off big pieces.///

The guys at the JY will put it in the back of my F150, I throw in some 1/4 pieces of firewood in the back before I head over there and maybe it can kinda brace against that wood ??.
Then I'll just go at it over the next couple days...take off the intake, the heads, disconnect the tranny and then I should be able to carry and/or slide those items out the back it down a ramp if I can't just carry them...

But. will the 90 tranny bolt up to my 95??

If you can take off the intake and water outlet housing, you can lay it on the flywheel. i'd strap it down though cause you dont want that rolling.

All the MTXs are built with the same bell housing.

Yes, as far as I know, the MTX will bolt up to any year SHO 89-95.

See if you can find someone you know that has an engine hoist that you can borrow. If not, put an ad on Craigslist and offer $20 to someone who will bring one over and unload it for you.

Before I had money, and therefore power equipment, I unloaded a Cast iron blocked Toyota Land Cruiser engine from my truck with just a 10' 2x6 and a piece of chain. I chained the 2x6 to a branch of a treewith the chain 1' from the end, attached the engine to the short end of the 2x6, and then pulled down on the other end of the 2x6. Gave me a 9-to-1 see-saw lever that raised it up enough to have my brother drive the truck away and bring in my engine stand (which collapsed under the weight of that engine by the way).

excellent...I'm thinking unbolt the tranny...slide it down a ramp of a couple 2x6s, take off the intake and other easier things...take off the heads and then slide off the short block...
I'll report how it goes over the next week..I have to get it out of the truck by July 15 and am going out east for 12 days next wednesday...so...be careful Terry, no strained backs or anything!!

I bought an engine hoist for my project years ago at Sam's club for ~$180. Great investment.

I would leave everything together and disassemble on the ground in your shop.
I would build a tripod from the longest lumber you can find, chain it together at the top and at the bottom and borrow a chain fall set and lift it up. Use 2 straps around the engine and experiment with the location until you can get a lift with no tilting.
If you can lift it an inch, you can drive away and lower the unit on a buggy or skid. Use your borrowed / rented chain falls to drag it inside.

I'm gonna do it...tomorrow...90 engine and MTX..$125...I'll do whatever I have to do to get the back of the truck empty before July 15th...I've got a big trip planned...OH BOY!!



If I have to get a hoist, then so be it...but I am thinking I can pull up a stool, an impact and have at it in the back of the truck...Give new meaning to the phrase...I did it in the back of my truck..sorry, couldn't resist...

If you're planning on trying to split the engine and trans in the back of the truck, make sure you take out the two bolts on the bottom that go through the oil pan and into the bellhousing.

The engine will sit nice and flat on the oil pan, then you can strap it down however you need to. It's rather top heavy though. If you plan to take the heads off, two decently strong people should be able to lift and remove the short block. It still probably weighs 200 pounds or so.

Everything will bolt up to a 95. I'm not sure i'd pull the heads, as it seems like the head gaskets are hit and miss (available for the 3.0 right now, but who knows for how long?). The best money I ever spent was an engine hoist from harbor frieght, only $130 with sales and coupons. It pays for itself after using it only once.

Thank you much buys...yeah...I'm thinking hard about a hoist, thing is I have no idea about the internals of the engine anyway, it could have a spun bearing or who knows...Are there some tests that might tell me.."yeah, it's toast, go ahead and take it apart..or its probably okay"...that I might do with it sitting in the back of the pick up?? I guess I could pull the valve covers and/or look down into each cylinder...If I do get the hoist, I could also take off the pan and see what things look like before taking heads off...any thoughts about it?

the first thing you want to do is to pull off the pan and remove the rod bearing caps one at a time to see what they look like. that is the typical first area of serious damage to the engine.

the engine is very top-heavy, so you will need to strap it down securely to get it home safely.

Pull the plugs, squirt a little oil down the cylinders and try and turn it over with your 3/4" socket on a breaker bar

Hey, thank you ShoMen, ..And...being honest, I kinda wanna tear the thing down as a training learning exercise, maybe after I do that, I'll feel braver about working on my running SHOs and doing things like cam seals and such by myself..Nothing like actually doing the work to teach you and then feel more confident...Like now, I''m getting pretty good at flaring brake lines and undoing rusted fittings and such from the past two years...it's crappy work in a way, but when you try things and it works, it just feels great. In the old days, I just did my own points and plugs and starters etc...I helped rebuild a Boss 302 mustang engine with a guy and another 327 chevelle...oh and I ruined my fathers econoline van engine a couple years before that,,...but hey...it was good learning...at least I thought so..
I gotta try front and/or rear coil/strut replacement soon on a couple of the girls, or pay someone, cause they're in varying stages of pretty far gone...

Oh and...so it can sit on the oil pan full weight?/ I'd never do that with a traditional oil pan..
