I just bought a mint 98 SHO with 95,000 miles on it for my daughter to use for college. I obviously need to get the cams welded ASAP. Is there anyone in Oregon that can do this?

Also, I saw where there was a later 3.4 that would run 150,000 miles on unwelded cams, vs the 70,000 miles on the earlier 3.4. Is there anyway to tell which is the later 3.4?

It's a legend. the 99s purportedly have an updated cam sprocket to cam setup but I doubt anyone would agree that they don't need to be welded.

Edit:
By the way, welcome! :thumb: That was one of the best "first posts" I've ever seen.

Agreed with 93rev2sev, I just got a '99 SHO with 135k miles, and my cam welder found one of the sprockets coming loose, mine is a post - decontent '99 SHO too, so if there was a "newer" design mine should have it.

V8SHO.com has a list of folks who are known to be competent cam welders, hopefully there's someone near you who can do it.

Thanks for the info on the new engines--I thought it may have been wishful thinking. My current automotive expertise lies with my 2002, lifted, 500 RWHP DMax (my mid life crisis rig). I haven't messed with cars much since I drag racred in the 1990's. However, this SHO is a nice enough car that we may keep it after my daughter finishes college. Many cars are throw-away cars, the 3rd Gen SHO is not. And that is high praise coming from a GM guy..... ;)

V8Sho.com shows the nearest welder in Sacramento, and I hate going to the the land for fruits and nuts..........

There is a guy who's posted here in WA State, I'll try to contact him.

That's the guy I saw. He is 3.5 hours away to the North, which isn't too bad.

Huh!?!?!?!? :oogle:

I've been around SHO's since 1988, and working on them daily since 2003 and this is the first I've ever heard of this "rumor" or "legend" WRT '99s. Where are you people reading/seeing this???

The 3.4L motors in every V8 SHO are identical. Inter-year changes such as injectors, oil coolers, idler pulleys, and assorted wiring/electronics, etc. have zero impact on the cams. There was also a new casting mold for the heads in '99, but again that didn't impact the cams (and the heads are fully interchangeable with all other V8 SHO heads).
