Hi,
I'm a new SHO owner and I feel like I have been scared to death about welding the cams!

I've read that people that have had them welded still had cam failure...?

What to do?

I have a 1999 with about 139,000 KM.

Does anyone know of people in Ontario that can do this work? Is it possible that the work was already done?

Thanks

Don't be skurd!

If the cams are welded properly, they will probably never fail(according to what I've read).

Also, many of the cam failed cars are still on the road with new heads...

If you decide to participate in meets, there are cam welding parties every so often.

I've never even driven a gen3, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Kirk would be your best bet, as he has a lot of practice, is not all that far from you, and does a full cleanup while about it, but if you cannot work that out, there are photos and descriptions of what needs to be done all over on V8sho.com, and any skilled welder can do the job if they exercise normal care. This is not rocket science. Nothing to be scared about, just check out the photos of what needs doing, read the background, and then go talk to Kirk or your favorite shop and welder and get it done.

Thanks

Thanks for the info...

I check out the camfest info and yes they say they will be in Peterborough. Hopefully that is not old information!

I tried to contact them, we'll see if they respond.

Have you guys had your cams welded?

It would really suck if I have that work done, and still have a cam failure.
Have you guys done this work?

Kirk (NESHO) is on the road and may not get back to your email that quick. Plenty of Canadians come down to the shop for the Service.

FWIW, my car was a cam failure that Kirk rebuilt and welded. It had over 210K miles on it at trade in and now belongs to another forum member.

Yes I am going to call NESHO today, see what they say.

I've read about people having problems after the cam welding.... I would hate to regret doing the works since everything is fine now.

Where have you read that? And keep in mind, people in the past have attempted welding the cams themselves and screwed it up. Kirk has TONS of experience cam welding the V8SHO's.

I've read 2 or 3 people saying that the ride was rough after the work... and they were told that was normal.

It's seems dangerous cuz it drives so good, don't want to mess it up.
But I believe it needs to be done since I've heard about it 100 times... "GET YOUR CAMS WELDED!"

I dont see how welding the cams could cause the car to ride rough. I just dont forsee there being enough rotational mass in order to make a difference.

And by the way, you should really get your cams welded. :p

I may be talking out of my pooper, but IIRC the rough running wasn't due directly to the cams post-weld, rather careless management of debris and sludge in poorly maintained engines by cam welding service providers with less attention to detail then that provided by NESHO.

The rough rides was just something I read a couple of times... nothing solid.

I will get my cams welded! And when I'm done, I will get a shirt that says "I got my cams welded!"
