Hi, I have a 98 SHO with 126000 miles. Pretty sure the cams are fixing to let go on the front of the motor going to open it up today or tomorrow and make sure. I'm wondering where is the best place & price to buy either welded or pinned cams from to replace mine before they go.

If it's ticking, or when you take it apart and see score marks on the cam by the sproket, I'd say you're right. At that point, throw it on a trailer and haul it down to Douglasville, GA and have Doug Lewis take care of em....they did mine, and in the process someone else trailered their beast in to have em welded and they were just starting to slip.......a word of advice though...if they are slipping, DON'T START THE DAMN CAR UNTIL THEY ARE WELDED!!!!!!!!!!!! Call Ford Performance SPecialists check out their web site www.fordspecialists.com They are the *******.

Took the front valve cover off and the very front cam sprocket has move about a cm or 2. I was wondering if can tap the sprocket back in place and then get them welded or just replace that cam and get the rest welded.

Do not start or drive the car. Trailer it somewhere to get welded or have someone come out and weld it. You will pay more trying to buy a welded cam to put in than to have a welder weld them up.

It could probably be welded where it is....old boy who brough his in while mine was getting worked on, his had moved a lil bit too....they just welded em on the spot after veryfying that the timing was still good....do not start this engine...I cannot stress that enough. It's damn close to failure. Throw the valve cover back on, push it onto a car hauler behind a u-haul and get yer **** down to GA...if you leave it apart, it probably won't even cost you as much as usual.

You can weld them as as they are. If it has slipped and worked causing all the splines to eat themselves you will need a new cam.

If it has slipped, and the timing is off, can't you retime that cam? (after the weld)

We should be in Nashville, TN a week from today if you want to get a tow dolly and bring the car there (I'm guessing from past experience about a 9 hour or so drive from Fayetteville) and we can weld the cams for you and resolve the chucking sprocket.

http://www.nesho.com for more information and to get in touch with us.

I'm wondering how to go about the timing. I pretty sure the front cam has spun a little. My question is do I weld first and then try to time it or do I try to time it then weld?

If it has moved, I would think to weld it then re-time it. You take a chance that it will come out of time again..and the work would be for nothing.

We have custom jigs for doing this in the car as well as out of the car, which took us a lot of time to develop and get just perfect. Without one of those (no we don't loan them out), I'd recommend pulling the cam and sending it to us, or buying a new cam.

Where can I find the proper way to time the 3.4. I looked in the ford shop manual and if was not very helpful. Is there any place on the web or on V8sho

The pic in the shop manual is all there is and all you need. I just recently timed my V-8 using that same info. The only thing you need to watch out for is the crank sensor tone ring. Some have two key ways(175 deg apart). It will not cause any damage to the engine but you will have to open it up and turn it to the other key way, so pay close attention to it when installing it. The rest is a piece of cake. I does help to have the cam holding tool but I'm sure it can be done without it. There are dark links on each timing chain that line up with all the sprocket timing marks.
