This motor is extremely easy to time, if you know how. But, also easy to mess up if you don't know how. The nice thing is that it is a non-inference motor, so if you do screw it up you don't damage it.

Here is a link to the AZ site that shows you how to do it. Scroll down to the SHO motor and it is pretty self-explanitory.

you are correct that the dimples on the sprockets should line up with where the valve cover gasket mates. They are 180 degrees from eachother. The autozone procedure covers it well.

To be sure you are correct, the timing chains have odd colored links on them. The procedure says they may be colored white. They may or may not be easy to see, probably not. It may be very difficult to see these links. Don't give up, you should be able to find the marked links. I know I had trouble at first but then found them.

If the chain marks are gone, here's an easy way to know if you have them right. There is a "tight" side and a "slack" side to every drive belt/chain/rope, whatever. The tensioner always rests against the slack side. With the tight side tight, the dimples should be on the outside of both sprockets and even with the edge of the head.
