Need some advice, I have the replacement engine ready to weld, I spoke with a local master welder in ref to TIG welding my cams (he will actually come to my shop) his question to me is "what type material are the cam shaft and drive gears made of?" are they mild steel? Should I pull the spun cam out of the original engine for him to practice on? does anyone have photos of a finished weld job? It looks like to me that the exhaust cam on the front head has a knurled lobe just behind the slave sprocket that should be welded as well. Any help would be much appreciated.
I noticed when preparing the replacement engine that the wiring harness on the back head (between cam cover and surge tank) has melted to the cam cover. wiring ok but the covering/conduit is nasty. Is this the wiring that I have read about needing to be insulated. obviously these do , just want to make sure I'm not overlooking any other potential harness melting trouble spot.
Also, the replacement engine (44k miles) is super clean inside but I was shocked, to say the least, how nasty and carboned up the intake, surge tank and I.M.R.C. lower intake was, is this a normal discovery for you guys when you pull these down? They are clean now but only after a lengthy bath in my parts cleaner.
Thanks guys for an outstanding forum,

not sure what this dancing lock thing is but it's cool
