I am thinking about buying another 89. The only problem with this car is that something is wrong with the cable shifter. The guy who has the car said he was driving it one day and he heard a noise from the shifter not the trans. no grinding or anything. Now he can't find first gear and it is very loose. 2nd gear is hard to find but 3rd,4th and 5th are there so is reverse. Is there any way a cable would stretch or disconnect? Any imput would be greatly appreciated. I really want this car thumbs_u .

Sounds like the cable is not extending or contracting enough. At the most it would probably need a new cable as long as your ABSOLUTLY sure there is nothing wrong with the tranny.

Maybe one of the clips that holds the cable housing to the shifter bracket popped off. That would let one of the cable flop around when pushed but work correctly when pulled.

Is there anyway to tell that the fork isn't bent? I am going to buy the car this weekend if it is only a problem with the cables. Anyone know a good SHO mechanic in New York, Brooklyn area?
