what is the least expensive way to reach it?
I want drive ability and decent mileage.
Is it possible without spending a lot of my ...FUNDS
just a question..
Seems as though 220 Hp nowadays is just 'average'
Even thought my 1989 seems fast as ****.
Hey...just a thought....
Dont stay up nights to answer.
Christmas is coming and I cant ask Santa!
Thanks

If your talkin CHP not crazy bad. a good y pipe, and a couple other well placed mods would get you close, but it'd be a bit of a challenge without cams. Just pick up a dry nitrous kit, plenty of guys running 75 shot here over thousands of miles. Heard one guy is on a stock clutch with close to 20k put on his car since the nitrous has been installed. There just isnt alot of HP in these motors to be free'd up. The worth while mods after the Y pipe arent cheap.

These cars can be a good time with some top to bottom maintenance, a y pipe, and some suspension mods/96+ brake upgrade. If you aren't satisfied after that you're going to be be either A.) spending a good chunk of money or B.) moving on to another platform.

it will take a bit but heres what I would do:

high flow y pipe
catback
EH runners w/ BBB

that combination should net close to a 30 hp gain at the flywheel, maybe throw in a K&N and it might help a little bit, but that would be the basic mod list I would start with.

Now if you want to get a little deeper into the engine, you could get into cams and those will gain quite a bit and definitly give you the biggest jump in HP.

Y-pipe, MAF, EH runner/BBB intake. Catback exaust is nice to have mostly for sound though. dynomax is a decent catback for the money. I say that setup would cost 1000-1200 total if you bought the stuff NEW and all together. Used stuff could almost cut it in half if you are patient. The EH and exhuast would be the costly stuff. BBB, MAF, and y-pipe can be had for cheap.

You will def. notice a difference in HP and TQ. alteast a solid 30 chp.

swap 3.2 into mtx, bbb's, port the intake and put in +20's, maybe some underdrive pullies and you have yourself a pretty quick driveable car.

I'm with the y pipe/Under drive pulleys/BBB's/ported intake crowd.......

I'd also add a light aluminum flywheel and a nice clutch to the mix....

Thinking about it, gosh darn if this exact subject hasn't been covered recently and in depth. Maybe not 250 chp in particular but the 300chp has been, and any info needed to reach 250chp could more then likely be obtained through those threads.

only thing about spray guys, and I am sure there are a few people at least who agree with me, is it is not on tap all the time. It's only for short bursts and that's no fun (well it is for that burst:naughty:), I want my power available 100% of the time. Plus filling that bottle can get pretty expensive, not to mention if you get caught using it on public roads you will be in a bit of trouble;)

Assuming you are up to date on all required 60K maintenance; if not, it is highly reccomended do the maintenance first, then spend on upgrades.
Catted equal length Y pipe
BBB's, ported intake
full length subframe connectors - best upgrade for stiffening chassis
FTSB, RSTB

x2 on maintenence. Just an anecdote, when SHOshop developed the equal length Y pipe they dyno tested it in comparison to their original performance catted pipe, and there was no discernable difference (+/- 1 hp, in the error). Both used 2.25 inch tubing.

Interesting that you say that ... Vadim told me that while the "peak" HP/TQ showed very little improvement, the 2K-5K RPM range showed 5-7 ft/lbs of TQ increase.

honestly your best bet would be a ypipe, brake upgrade,suspension,3.2 swap, and some decent tire and wheel combo. that setup in a light 89 will make for a fun car. then later on if you want to drop a nother $250 or $300 pick up a used Zex kit on ebay.
that combo will net you a low 13second 1/4mile car thats a beast from a roll.
should be a decent corner carver too!

That can happen when the commanded AFR is in the 11's... which it is from the factory at high load and RPM.

ok.....
so I should not consider a Y-pipe.
cost vs. results?
I should consider BBB`s and some polishing
A good 60k is 1st priority?
What the non 'do a search, you idiot' folks are saying is:
my motor is adequate
better money spent on suspension and brakes.
Im really surprised about the y-pipe thing...I thought that was THE single best mod you could do!
more info needed...
particulary about the 'tuning' comment
