Well I was trying to get my radio out by taking the center console apart as I do not have the tool they talk about in my manual.

I went and unscrewed the shifter not thinking that the thing might have wires in it. I broke two white wires :(

How can I fix these? I cut the longer thin tube off the shifter so I could see where they attach too and it does not look like I will be able to soilder the back on?

Does this mean I need a new shifter?

I am assuming these go to the O/D button? I can still drive then?

What about that rubber thiner boot at the bottom I cut off, important?

Thanks.

p.s. I need help this was all over a cd changer install which i posted in the electronics section!

when removing a ford radio you can make your own tool by cutting the ends of a coat hanger and there are your 2 keys and they are free

Ok the coat hanger worked!!!! It was crude looking and of course I used a white one so I have white shavings everyplace....it took a slot on my peg board for the future ;)

Thanks a lot!!! Now back to work trying to get this done, what a PITA.

I guess I will have to run those other white wires to a new switch someplace huh?

I put it all back together and the shift **** is loose but it won't slide off, it will rotate though. Any ideas? The pin is back in...

You broke your shifter. It will still function however it will drive you crazy. I did a similar thing to mine trying to remove it. There is a U shaped clip that is inserted through the slit that keeps the shifter in place. Once you twist the shifter in a circle the metal clip destroys the inside of the shifter. Mine eventually had the shift release button pop out.

The two white wires go to the OD button. You must remove the OD button (button can be pulled straight out) prior to shifter removal. The wires are conncted to a 2" long white plastic piece that is also held in position by the metal shifter keeper. It slides into the shifter in a track and can be completly removed and the wires can be replaced by soilder new ones.

I pulled the u shaped metal unit out prior to pulling the **** off. I put it back in so the shifter does not come up but it has slop in it side to side for some reason.

So you did pull the metal clip out prior to removing the shifter. The shifter doesn't unscrew it just pulls straight up off the shaft. If it wiggles/spins then you may not have it back on all the and the clip isn't in the slot on the shaft. DON't twist/spin the shifter with the clip installed or you will damage it beyond repair. When I changed my broken shifter out I spent several hour over two days trying to get the new one to seat down onto the shaft all the way. In the process I cut the wires on the shaft. Had to take it all apart and soilder the wires back on. The OD connector with wires has to remain in the correct position while sliding the shifter over the shaft inorder for it seat all the waydown and allow the clip to insert correctly in the clip slot on the shaft. You may want to check the clip out to make sure you havent deformed it while inserting it.

I seperated the lower rubber portion on my shifter to repair it and once the shifter is on you can't tell.
