I had my 92 transmission apart and was surprised, but pleased to find brass synchros.
I thought that it was the early trans, the 89, that had brass and that the updated synchros are the "paper" lined ones.
Can anyone confirm what synchros are in what year box?

Are you referring to the blocking rings? The main structure of the blocking rings was brass for the OEM rings on my 1991 gear box and brass on the Ford replacements I recently installed from SHO NUT. The friction surface on the 1st through 4th gear blocking rings was the fiber material on both the 1991 OEM rings and the replacements. The 5th gear blocking ring had no liner and used a brass friction surface on both the 1991 OEM and replacement rings.

The sliding portion of the synchros has always been steel, correct?

Scott just described it perfectly, what most people call synchros are actually blocking rings.

Ok, I know this is a little off topic, but Scott, how do you know so damn much! Are you a mechanic? If not, you should be. You'd put a lot of us guys outta business man!

OK, shop manual page 07-03-31, part #16, RING-SYNCHRO BLOCKER.
A blocker ring, is a synchro ring.
I've done more then a few in T-10s, Ford T & C toploaders, and Doug Nash 5 speeds.
When the "sychros" are going, it means that they won't slow down the spinning gear enough to let the slider engauge easily. They wear smooth on the inside of the cone and loose thier friction and thus thier braking ability to the spinning gear.
They are brass in my '92.
I did have them out and they were like new.
Are we talking about a paper liner on the inside of the ring where is mates to the gear tapered cone or a paper blocker-synchro ring?
Mine are pure brass and it is the original to the car and hasn't been rebuilt.
I haven't had a T-5 apart but i think that I've heard the same "paper" reference to them. It was my impression that the "fiber ring" is a performance upgrade to the brass.
