OK so I am not new to the car world but I guess I have never dealt with this question while ordering new brake parts. A few of the sites ask if the brakes have vented hats or no vented hats.... Any advice on what I am looking for? 2013 SHO with no PP. Thanks in advance.

PP or no PP rotors are interchangeable at least for 2013+. My car had the vented hats originally, replacement Ford rotors did not.

The issue I am having is that part numbers differ but am I say to assume I could use either?

The parts may have been updated, I do not believe Ford makes the vented hat rotors anymore hence different part numbers. I didn't have issues but don't have parts numbers to verify anything.

Anyone want to tell me what a vented hat is? I think that's my first question and second is would it matter either way which ones I get?... Vented or not vented? I'm ignorant to what the definition of it is.

Vented hat rotors are available from Wagner / Raybestos I believe. Helps with heat dissipation. Kind of looks like the police steelie with the rotor portion around it LOL.

So whether the car has them now or not, it won't make any difference if I order them vented, correct? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies everyone. A little more research and hopefully will purchase new brakes in the next week or two.

I had to go to RA and check out the rotors, as I've never heard of vented hat rotors!

Whatta joke! It was immediately obvious why they make these...... Cost savings, pure and simple. Rotors are giant heat sinks, the more material, the more heat absorbed. A few dorky holes near the hub do nothing for heat loss, and there's less metal to absorb heat, which is why Ford can save a few cents on each rotor.

True vented rotors have more metal to absorb heat, and more surface area to dissipate it. Which is most likely why mfrs seem to be going to solid rotors...... Less metal and simpler to make=cheaper.

Yes and no. I don't agree that true vented rotors have more metal to absorb heat. Vented rotors have less material, but more surface area which improves the heat dissipation. A solid rotor would retain heat for longer since there is less surface area to dissipate heat, so a properly designed vented rotor will be better than a solid rotor since if the rotor is unable to dissipate heat braking effectiveness decreases. In the case of brake rotors, more surface area is more beneficial than more more metal given the same envelope dimensions. The added manufacturing steps/labor involved in making a vented rotor will typically save more money than making a solid rotor with fewer process steps as well, so the cost savings would most likely be greater with a solid rotor than with a vented rotor.

The vented hat rotors didn't just cut holes into the hat but the cooling vanes were moved to face outboard of the hub. Ford stopped using these rotors and all of the new Taurus/Explorer with 352mm "HD" front brakes switched to a conventional rotor design, and it seems Motorcraft OE-level replacement from rotors did the same. Motorcraft still has a High Service Level replacement rotor with the vented hat. My 2017 Fusion Sport came from the factory with inverted cooling vanes but a solid rotor hat.
