My 98 has trouble in cold weather (below freezing) shifting out of park. Once the car warms up a little it will finnally let the button in on the shifter. It isn't the brake switch or the fuse, I think it is something mechanically binding. I can hear things clicking trying to work and the procedure in the owner's manual for overriding the interlock doesn't work either. Never a problem in the summer. Any thoughts? Is the mechanism in the center console or the dash (I hear clicking near the steering column when I push the shifter's button)?
Thanks, Jamie

I took apart the center shift console and it seems like the problem is at the other end of the cable (The cable that the thumb button actuates) that runs up into the dash. I might try unhooking the cable for now to get around the problem.

When my car sits out in the sun on really hot days the button will stick in. :corn:
