Did the car have a automatic starter installed at some point? Or possibly a car alarm. Sometimes the brake switch is used for both applications. If they removed the system before you got the car, then they might have disconnected the brake switch accidentally. There isnt too much that can go wrong that wouldnt make the brake lights function. Check for a trailer harness that might have been installed at some point. Its probably not a bad ground since the running lights work? Check the fuse block, possibly a short caused a wire to become disengauged from the fuse block. I am not sure, but on earlier Taurus SHOS 89-90. The brake lamp feed was sent to the multifunction switch. The reasoning for this was due to the blinker control needed to blink a single brake lamp bulb. This could be a possiblity depending on if that is the case for the 92-95. I had a 1992, but i no longer have it. I know that there are two bulbs for each side. Both are for running and brake lighting. The outer is controlled by the blinker.
