ok...true its a ******...but all you need is a 1/4 drive 7/32 socket with a short 1/4 drive extension, and the ratchet. It gits right in there. Trust me, I've had mine off four times this week trying to get the cam seal to seal. Finally today I think I got it licked.

I've always used a 7/32 and it has worked fine. Is the bolt not turning or is it stripped?

Doug

and i used a 5.5 for the top one and it was fine

How did you get that bolt off? I'm trying to replace my CID too.

The problem isn't the socket, it's REACHING the bolt and turning it. There's just not much room.

I'm going to have to go to the auto parts store and look for some sort of long handled but very low profile tool to reach down there.

There isn't a "bottom" bolt on the CID sensor. There is a "front" and a "back" bolt, but nothing on the bottom. The bolts that hold the black, plastic sensor body to the aluminum mounting ring are located in shallow insets, or divots, in the sensor's outboard face. You should be able to feel these divots with a finger. Make sure you are working on the 5.5mm bolts that secure the sensor to the mounting ring and not the 8mm (thanks Yamaha V6) bolts that hold the aluminum mounting ring to the head.

I still don't see how there is no room with a small 1/4" ratchet and 7/32's socket.

I used a "sidewinder" ratchet and made really easy work of it, I knew that with my gorrilla mits for hands a standard ratchet wasnt going to work without removing the ps resevoir. Then again that was a few years ago and Ive learned to work better around the confined spaces of our engine bays. One thing is for sure there are different clearance issues between the ATX and the MTX, working on my MTX was a lot easier than the ATX...it caused me alot of confusion when I would try to follow MTX owners DYI instructions because where they would say I could reach something, there was no way. You can tell that the ATX was an afterthought on Fords part.

5.5mm holding the cam sensor to the ring;
8mm holding the ring to the cylinder head.

I replaced one that was starting to rust this weekend. Trick is to get stuff out of the way if you can, that's all.

Bingo! That's what I ended up doing. I probably just have fatter hands than most but I unbolted the engine dampener and powersteering resevoir so I could move that shock thing out of the way. Voila, I then had room to work my left hand in from the front of the engine with my palm facing the timing chain cover.

Can that cam seal be changed while in there, or does the head cover have to come off?
That cam seal is leaking like crazy on mine now.
Will oil damage the cam sensor? It seems to be fine so far.
Why not slather the whole thing up with Hi temp RTV?

i found a really really easy way of doing the back bolt on a MTX.... well actually, you can do both bolts, just need a swivel...

you need atleast 3 4'' 1/4 drive extensions. what you are going to do is look into the passenger side fender well, the is a hole. the best way to spot it is to put a shop light in the engine bay, mainly on the cam sensor. take a look into the fender well.... you will see the hole, and the bolt...take your contraption of 1/4'' drive extentions, and put it through the hole, and go into the engine bay and line it up with the bolt. Its kinda hard to get the drive on it from the fender well, so just hold the ratchet, and lean over the fender....
for the front bolt, just put a swivel on the end. you have to angle the ratchet that way.. of course...
but you get the idea...

This is ALOT easier than trying to get on the front of the motor and the strut tower.
there is really only enough room in there to move your hand around, which with this method, that is all you need. Just to place the sensor in there, connect the sensor, put the bolts in, (or you could put them on the drive, either way) and thats it... no more foul language at that sensor any more...

i have yet to try this on the ATX but, it might work... BUT the sensor is alot easier to get off on the ATX....

Enjoy!!!

I dont know if GI guys can do this, as i havent worked on a GI.... but if the motor sits the same, which i think it does, it shouldnt be a problem... unless that hole isnt there.....
