16.7??? Then obvisouly you don't drive it like the average person, for which the MPG ratings are based. That's hardly Fords marketing fail. I'm averaging 22mpg, with a combination of city and highway cruising as well as the occassionaly romp that makes this car fun.

I never claimed to drive like the average person. I drive like a bat out of ****, however anything under 24 mpg doesn't sound like "ECO" to me.....

I'm about 90% city driving and I only average in the 15-17 range. When I actually get some highway trips it hits the 20's, but not otherwise.

I'm about 90% city as well. Still haven't had a chance to take it on a good highway trip

Maybe time for a poll on mileage and driving habits. 90% city will always give lower mileage numbers so it will be interesting to see what that lower average is. As well, it will be interesting to see what the higher averages are.

Zeus, not knocking your driving style at all, just wondering why the disparity in mileage between cars.

Sigh........

I never will get to do my "First 5,000 Mile Impression" as a complete study, I keep jumping in on these one off topics. And....this one started out as an observation on High Pressure Fuel Pumps, not mileage.

For the record....

5,000 total miles average mpg is 22.0 according to the computer.

3,000 miles are commuter miles, 12 miles each way to my business on 2 lane roads with maximum speed of 45 mph and about 6 stop lights. Average mileage for that 3,000 was 18 mpg.

2,000 miles were logged on a trip two weeks ago to Nebraska and back.
Average speed on the Interstates was 75-80 mph, average mpg on that trip was 25 mpg.

That is exactly the same mpg I got over a 20,000 mile stretch with my 1992 Town Car which I drove for five years before replacing it with the SHO.
Given that the SHO, while smaller, is light years ahead of the TC in terms of performance, I consider that a pretty good performance.

Lest I forget, to the issue of the HPFP thingie with BMW, I am not trying to be a chicken little here at all. I just learned over many years at f150online covering two vehicles, there is no such thing as too much information.

We all helped each other a lot with early ID of potential problems that we could discuss with our respective dealers and/or Ford reps and problems were solved a lot earlier than when we did not have these internet Forums.
To be sure, a lot of problems were one-offs or not relevant to various Ford vehicles with powertrain/engine configurations that happened to be similar to other manufacturers but you never know.

Bill, my apologies. I believe it was my post that got everyone else off topic. In regards to the BMW HPFP, like I mentioned before, it was always something that scared me because I have been hearing about these fuel pump failures on the E60.net forum for over 2 years! This was not my main reason for getting out of my 535 and getting a SHO, however it did partially influence my decision. (main reason was this crappy economy and not being able to afford the Bimmer payments anymore :frown:)
I want to offer my thanks for you making us aware of this "potential" problem in this forum. :thankyou:

I will start a new thread regarding my fuel economy "grievances" :)

I also jumped on nthe mileage bandwagon so my apologies as well. Yes thanks for the headsup regarding the fuel pumps. Something to keep an eye on to see if this is a problem area for all or just one company's design that needs modification.

Mileage in EB Flex is worse.... Blaming it on the HPFP!

Want to thank you mucho for posting this thread as my BMW friend is really on the war-path about his issues. Vehicle definitely went into "limp mode" and BMW claims it was #3 cyl mis-fire and a simple re-programming fix. So far... So good...

Like I mentioned when I posted, I'm rather heavy footed (like to accelerate) and I'm mostly city:

That was the first 5k miles...I'm up to over 7000 miles now, so I'll add the other gas data in an get a new graph, there's a few long trips in there on it.

And The Beat Goes On

This just popped up on my AOL mail.

Again, not wanting to be Chicken Little, but I think we use not only the same system but the same supplier, Bosch.

Just something to be aware of. BTW, I think the BMW spokesperson is being just a little bit coy. This is all over the net on BMW forums and even here where some of you are or were BMW owners of this range.

For what it's worth, Bosch has continued to make design improvements on the HPFP. The pump in the SHO is the latest design level.

It's not a bad idea to keep an eye on the BMW issue, but I don't think it has appeared on the SHO yet.
