Well I sent pics and they fall a little short of real knowing. My synchros and blocking rings should be there by now. For the extra $16 round trip shipping I decided to have her see them in person and sell me what I need and mark that which is bad, marginal and still serviceable. Then I will know for sure when I do the tranny this one is replacing.

You're a little far to bring it to me personally but by all means feel free to make the journey.

I have known a few people who were **** about the care and maintenance of their cars to lose a diff "at random" as stated, but the vast majority are because of abuse or neglect. The thing about junk yard transmissions is you never know what you're getting unless you open it up to find out. A friend of mine blew his diff pin and got another one from a junk yard which he then brought out to me. While going through it I found that 2 of the 3 pins that hold the pinions in place were broken. If he were to have driven the car, dare I say even once, he would have been in the same spot as he was just a few days prior, only shorter by however much he paid for the trans from the JY.

A Frankenstein trans can be made providing that all the parts are good. When moving a diff from one case to another or changing the differential bearings and/or races, the pre-load must be checked and set as needed with a new diff shim otherwise bad things can happen. There are a few people that will argue that fact, but to do a job properly this is a step you mustn't skip. A full inspection and cleaning must also be performed on all the parts so that the decision can be made whether or not the parts are still serviceable or not.

When a diff blows it sends aluminum shards throughout the trans, oftentimes the pinion also bounces around inside and everything that it comes into contact with, it damages. If you buy some transmissions for parts to send along that's great, but do not spend a lot of money for a blown trans. There is just no promise that anything inside can be reused without opening it up to find out. If someone gives you a promise that the internals are "all good" without having opened up the trans to see for themselves they're full of shit.

Keep me posted on what you plan on doing. If I can help I'll be more than glad to do so. Best to contact me via PM like you did before or email, I'll see it a lot faster than your thread here. It might take me a day to get back with you but hopefully my schedule will be a little more forgiving now than it has been the last week or so.

The one thing in my mind that concerns me about putting gears from different used transmission, is that the gears have been worn in with its mate. If you change mates doesn't that create stress inside the transmission?

I wouldn't think so, the gears are also worn by the synchronizers and blocking rings and we change those out. If a gear breaks we change them out. Point is, I seriously doubt that there would be enough wear on the mating surfaces of the gears to cause any stress or damage. If there was that much wear then it's time to change the gears out anyway and I would think the wear would be quite evident. My .02 worth.

I would think the only "incompatibility" you might get is a little noise from the gears...nothing we don't already deal with.

A diff pin can rear it's ugly head in 30 seconds.

Maybe.....maybe not. It will show itself if there's an immediate problem. After that it will be largely dependant on you and your driving habits. Make sure that they put good trans fluid in it for starters. After that just avoid burnouts and the like, hopefully it'll be ok.

That's a good deal in my opinion. The only thing I'd worry about is the differential, though. And make sure they install transmission fluid, not gear oil. :thumb:

I am about to do a 3.0->3.2 swap and will also be pulling out my tranny. Should I look through it while I have it out? Should I have the diff pin strengthened while I have it out? I will at least be putting some fresh synthetic fluid in it, is there anything else I should do as preventative maintainence/upkeep?

Hopefully, when you get the "new" tranny you reinforce the diff. Would be in your best interest. Most MTX guys and gals here have had this problem, not fun the first time, but the second can be avoided. Good Luck
