I've herd of this happening before here's a pic I found awhile back before I replaced mine.
This is not my PTU just worst case of what could happen.

Not much room for fluid in there. It's a shame they didn't design that the right way.

So I just got off the phone with the dealer here in Florida. Apparently my PTU split in half. They do not stock it and emergency ordered one from Memphis. They are hoping to have it tomorrow, worst case Friday so I can have the car back by Saturday. Looks like warranty coverage also. I commend Sun State Ford and Central Florida Lincoln for their assistance and drive to see that me and my family are taken care of. Ford roadside assistance on the other hand ... well I'll just leave that there for now.
Awesome. Maybe I'll do that tune now:)

Must have been a LOT of pressure in there to make the case split like that. Possibly a clogged vent. OR just poor sealing to begin with. Anyhoo, glad warranty is providing coverage! Be sure to provide feedback to Ford on their Roadside Assistance program also, may not make any difference, but why not be on record :)

So at 40K you had a PTU failure. How many of those miles were on a tune? Did you ever check the fluild?

I have 55k on my 13 PP SHO, and am going to change out/check my next weekend.
Only around 7k with a tune. I changed the fluid at 35k. Unfortunately when I changed it I did notice that I was only able to remove a couple ounces however when I refilled it it took close to 14 ounces which tells me it was extremely low to begin with.

Very interesting......Thank you for all the info. Hopefully it gets fixed correctly and you wont have to revisit this again.

It's not a common uncommon failure to splut the PTU in half. Sometimes they can damage the transmission case too. What's cool is when that happens and come in like 1000 miles later with the concern.

Like, how long ago did it make a noise? Well.... I didn't see anything wrong....

It really doesn't look like there's room for fluid in there at all. I'm buying some ramps this week and really getting under mine to check her out thoroughly. No problems at the moment, but like we say, better safe than sorry. Because all mine would be out of pocket repairs.

Might want to check into a) Redline Lightweight Shockproof, and b) installing a drain plug to make things easier, for those without 2013+ Perf Pkg. Particularly if you love the Waa Waa pedal :nut:

I'm really doubting pressure inside the case caused it to split open. That would take a HUGE amount of pressure to split a (cast?) case like that from pressure buildup alone. I'm guessing that bearing failed due to lack of oil, that caused the shaft to become misaligned, and then the shaft pushed against the case causing a fracture point.

I'm not saying that's the case, only my guess. I cannot see a case building up enough pressure inside to cause a split. That would have to be multiple hundreds of pounds of pressure and I don't see how it could generate that even with a completely clogged vent.

The case is not one piece. What i meant to say that the seal was properly made when the ptu was released for iuse, but the pressure compromised that seal.

But your scenario sounds good to me too :)

So still no part delivered. It was emergency ordered from the dealer through ford parts and they expected it yesterday but it didn't arrive. Thought they would get it today, but nope. If it doesn't show up tomorrow I'm stuck in Florida until at least Monday but my rental house is done Sunday ... wonderful.

I am sure Ford will pick up the tab for the extra night(s). This is through no fault of your own.

True, but first I need to contact them, but customer care is closed on weekends. Then I also need to fight for rental reimbursement, since it should have been covered. Then trying to find a place that isn't going to break the bank on a last minute notice won't be easy. If roadside assistance had done their job properly my car would have been at the dealer 24 hours sooner giving them a whole extra day. The dealer down here is doing everything they can. They did tell me the part definitely shipped but ford doesn't provide the dealer with any tracking information, which I just don't get.

I guess I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Well again no part. It is supposedly at the Fedex holding center in Orlando. Won't be at the dealer until Monday afternoon. So now I have to drive the rental home and take my family home which will put me in Chicago Monday evening, then fly back to Florida to get my car and drive it home missing about three days of work in the process. Fri-kin one way flights to Florida are over $200 but to ship my car home it's 850 to 1000. I am beyond frustrated at this point. Then I have to start battling customer care about this whole mess because Ford can't support their customers. I apologize for the rant but this is frickin ridiculous.
