Hey guys, I just bought a 91 rust free SHO. I'd like to keep it that way, but it WILL be driven in winter. I'm just wondering if you guys have any tips on how to keep these genI sho's rust free? I keep the car VERY clean on the outside and wax it a lot, just wondering if there is any certain parts I should clean particularly well..like shoot out the inner fender wells with the sprayer or anything....?

any tips?

thanks!

Just keep it clean, polished and waxed. Bathe it by hand at least twice a month (the other times at the car wash). Keep the undercarriage clean, wheel wells and engine bay.

Other than that, I'm not sure what can stop rust from forming. If you can, take your ground effects off and clean under there also.

Wax it every week. Using a the lowest abrasive wax for every week like Meguires #26 Hi tech yellow wax. Then every 3 weeks use Gold Class meguires wax. Then every month follow up with a meguires cleaner wax. This method works and it keeps the car nice and glossy. Expensive though.

You mentioned that you will be driving this car in winter. If the car is not undercoated, do it. Every 3 to 4 weeks I take a can of white grease and lift the car up and spray ALL the bolts and welds underneath the car including exhaust brackets. Don't forget the straps and bolts that hold up the fuel tank, they like to rust first, spray those with white grease also. As far as the bushings and suspension components, I spray them with silicone spray. Also spray the emergency brake cable with silicone spray.
Flush the underbody and inner wheel wells with water every month also.
For the rest of the vehicle, just wax it every 2 months and it'll be fine. :)
For me this is easy because I work for a Toyota dealership, and have access to lifts all the time.
Good luck with your SHO.

Tar or ashphalt undercoating works great too. You just have to make sure the undercarriage is very clean before putting it on. And it needs to be redone every few years.

You can use a oil sprayer and spray the under of your car with the waste oil from an oil change. I do mine twice a year....

Undercoating should not be done on a used car. It traps the rust and moisture that's already there and just continues.
Other then that...in the winter go thru a under carriage car wash at least once a week to rinse off the rinse off the salt.
