I've experimented with a few different CAIs including running hoses to the front of the bumper cover and by far the one that woke the engine up is a short piece of hose coming out of the airbox facing into the fender opening. It made a difference in the pep of the engine and is less noisy when the secondaries open than a tube running to the front. Apparently there is plenty of cold air around the wheel well and possibly even a little bit of a ram effect when the car is moving. Also thinking the engine breathes much better with the shortest pathway possible into it.

I never noticed a difference with nothing on the end of the airbox, with a rubber tube from airbox to fenderwell, or with just a short section of the saxocone on the airbox to get into the fender.

Sounded best without a filter in the box though. Secondaries

Secondaries were much louder with the old tube I had running to the front than with just the short hose coming straight out of the box believe it or not. Pleasantly surprised at how much better the engine runs now as well. It's actually got some pep in it.

Because of expansion as temperature increases, getting cold air to the engine increases engine output as it puts more air/fuel mixture in the cylinder with each charge. You can see this easily on the track as runs in cooler ambient temps regularly are better than those done when the temperatures are hotter.

One of the pieces on V8SHO (I think it was) some time ago went through the arithmetic of how much air could flow through the OEM air supply sax vs. how much the engine could consume. It was not pretty. Opening up the flow to bring more air, and colder air, to the engine cannot do anything but help.

I suggest some form of 'Porter' style cold air intake, as it is cheap and effective, though as pointed out above, it is not designed to make more noise, just to get lots of colder air to the motor. Slice off the old sax at the air box, leaving a lip, and discard the rest. Then attach a rubber hose to the air box and route it to the inner wheel well. The cost of doing all this is a few bucks for the hose and screws and a clamp or two, plus a couple of hours of messing about. The results are a much happier engine.
