Battery, okay to touch?

Okay, I know I can touch it, I'm not THAT dumb.
But what I mean is, I was taking mine off the other day (need to put a new one in) and I was loosening the screws that go through the cables and I guess I turned the wrench too far or something and it sparked. I THINK, I hit the metal holder that holds the battery in place. Anyway, is that just what I did?
Plus, I'm paranoid to take off the cables, they're on really tight, so I've been trying to lift them free. I don't want to wiggle them because I'm afraid it'll friction and spark or something.
Anyway, am I paranoid or what? Can I unloosen the bolts on the cables without killing myself?

Yeah, you're being over-careful, which is fine.

Always loosen and remove your negative cable first. Always be careful not to touch other metal peices with the wrench when loosening a terminal. You can wiggle, pry, etc all you want, don't worry about "creating a spark".

Also, always connect your positive first.

Just remove the Neg terminal first to reduce the risk of making any more sparks. Loosen up the bolts and wiggle the clamps free is what you have to do.

there is a "battery terminal removal tool" available at your local parts house. it looks like a 2 jaw puller.

wear some leather work gloves when working around the battery and you wont get shocked.
