Looking for a recommendation to touch up a pretty long rusting area at the tip of the hood which I just recently noticed. I am surprised the detail shop didn't see it as an opportunity to upsell a paint correction service. Anyway, I looked on here and found an old thread that mentioned a place called Kragen. Not sure if that is an auto parts store or a manufacturer but couldn't find them.

any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Pics help. If it's big, body shop is your best bet. For little things I use Dr. Color chip.

I could be wrong but i think our hoods are aluminum which means they cant rust. if you see bubbling on an edge I had the same thing happen to my wifes fusion and the body shop said it was delaminating and would have to be stripped and repainted to fix correctly. either way i would recommend a body shop (not maaco) take a look at it unless you have some body shop experience, might be a little more involved than fixing a parking lot scratch. also have the ever popular bug deflector solution or a good ol fashioned bra to cover it up. but a picture may nullify my entire post here, just going based on what you said initially.

It's a building process with wet sanding in between with a gradual buildup. Body shop if it's as wide as you day. I use very small and fine applicators.

200 Pcs Touch Up Paint Brushes,Disposable Micro Paint Chip Repair Applicators for Automotive Paint Detailing, Stone Chips,Scratches(1.0, 1.3, 1.8, 2.5MM, Multi) https://a.co/d/bac03DJ

I used wet sanding to remove tape lines. Takes patience - and don't expect perfection.

Yeah, that looks like more than a touch up job. It looks like it's already starting to show rust. Is it in more than one area too? Touch ups work more for minor damage and if it's not past the primer.

Yeah, not sure why the pictures are so blurry but that is definitely rust. That is why I want to address it now. I have not seen it anywhere else thankfully. not surprised these exist given the location.

Permatex works well

Its stops the rust - then you can paint over it. Try and gently remove any rust - leave as much of a rust free surface - then coat - let dry and paint/touchup, use those cotton tipped brushes - use layers - dont over apply the touch up paint. You can use a fine wet sanding grit to remove irregular paint bumps.

ok, thanks for the steps. So I shouldn't just lightly sand the rust away and the apply the touch up paint? You are saying to say picky away at the rust, then use the Permatex, let it dry and then use the paint touch up? I never do this kind of stuff so your advice is very much appreciated!

Yeah just use black sanding paper from the auto store. Get a grit levels. https://www.wikihow.com/Wet-Sand-a-Car

Don't laugh but use these instructions, I had. Those are the grit abrasives you want. Don't do more than the area affected, use green car paint tape and tape off area. Avoid pressure. Remove tape when rust is removed.
